Okay, I know what an ER is, I also know what AM and PM abbreviate...

But what is an ED?

Sorry about that...it's the Emergency Department.

One of the evolutions in medicine is that emergency services has become its own academic branch of medicine. There was a time when really any primary care physician could work an ER with little more added training. Over the last few years, though, emergency medicine has become its own specialty, with full blown residency training programs. In general, hospitals have added more and more resources to emergency medicine, expanding their operations if not their resources. For many people, especially in poorer communities, the ER is used as a primary care health facility. In our current climate of HMOs, if something is even a tiny bit out of specialty for a physician and they want to protect their liability, they send the patient to the hospital. As a sum result, I think the term Emergency Room has evolved into Emergency Department, at least among people in health care.

Either that, or they want to distance themselves from the TV show.

Do I have to explain TV as well?

No. But an explanation of TV may prove interesting.

I've always wondered: If you were to remove the phosphor-coated glass on the front of a CRT (Cathode Ray Tube), would you be able to feel anything as the electron gun tried to paint it's picture on you?

Thanks in advance for your explanation,

Hmmm... I wonder what % of the electrons are stopped by the TV "screen" in the first place.

I guess you mother was right. Don't sit too close to the TV when watching it.
