Anesthesiology and Stress... anonymous March 20 2006, 04:14:45 UTC
Sounds like you had an interesting experience with Todd, I think all kinds of surgical proceedures are fascinating. However, I learned in my Senior year of High School that I didn't want to be an Anesthesiologist. I was in a class called "Rat Bio". It was an accelerated Biology course which was highly competitive and selective. Part of the course entailed surgical proceedures on rats (hence the name of the course). We performed castration and oviectomy procedures in teams of 2 on live rats, each playing the part of both surgeon and anesthesiologist. We didn't have any high tech equipment or IV lines, we used ether cones and visually kept track of breathing rate... we also did a modified version of CPR if the rat coded. It was so stressful for me knowing the rat's life was in my hands that I knew I could never hold that responsibility for humans. -Tina
