2:36 PM 11/14/10 · I haven't rented much of anything in months, but I spotted something interesting at the library the other day and scooped it up...

...been too long since I saw a samurai movie.

Ronin Gai struck me as a dark comedy but then I don't watch a lot of Japanese movies that aren't anime so this may be just typical funnies for them. It's the story of 4 Ronin (masterless samurai) who have faded from their honorable days and live in a brothel. 1 works as a bouncer there, another seems to lack all purpose, another sells birds while his sister tries to help him reclaim his true path, and the last is a homeless womanizer who truly seems to love one of the whores that works there.

There's been a series of murders in the area, all looking to be done by a samurai, but in truth it goes much deeper than that. Some deviant Samurai that serve their Shogun with dedication, support his love of butchering women, and have been doing the killings with him...

...and somehow or other, this leads to a more direct encounter with this particular brothel.

The Ronin have a chance to regain their honor, whether they want it or not, and it's a very fun ride. Admittedly, their are gaps of serious story telling between the giggle inducing parts. Although the very beginning is hilarious in the ways the whores throw themselves at their clientele.

Use of 'whore' may seem excessive here and in the film but it's how they're referred to throughout the movie.

I'd definitely say Ronin Gai is worth watching at least once.
