Come walk with me.

Nice to meet you again.

This incarnation brought to you by the generosity of one fyreharper .  (Thank you, thank you.)

So let me tell you about my new name.  Rentetsu is Japanese for "wrought iron," which I think is a perfect combination of aesthetics and functionality.  Of beauty and strength.  It's something tempered and forged (but not faked).  It will bend ( Read more... )

Silly. Jan-the-verse. Janitor-of-the-Universe. Eighth grade energy, and I still like fixing things.

It used to be both "odradek" and "coppelius" were taken but I guess not anymore! Hurr.

Margaret comes from family, with a bit of a twist. I was going to be named after either my great aunt or my mother's, I'm not sure which. Her name was Margery. Mom was somewhat out of it with the anesthesia, and it came out Margaret instead. I much prefer Margaret.

As for my username, well, the first place I registered my online presence was actually an NCIS board, and I was so new to participating on the net that my username there was actually my first name. In the chat room for the board, it got too long for people to type out, so I agreed to have it shortened to Mari, and I started liking the nickname. 42 is the meaning of life, and 12 is the answer to anything else, according to an old family in joke.

That's a really interesting twist. Hurray for anesthesia?

I didn't know the full story behind your names; thank you!

I'm glad that I can associate old bones with you now. Dry and elegant, waiting, full of secret knowledge. That's a Tracy, to me.

And I've always adored your parents for thinking about that sort of thing. That's a really interesting thing to consider. I mean, I have a name that's really common and could only belong to a girl, so.

Thanks, Bones. Good stories.

I came up with my username for an AIM account around the end of high school. Bard-wannabe was the idea. I'd been enamored of the (A)D&D bard archetype--minstrel, story teller, jack of all-trades, that sort of thing. Sort of ironic since I have no musical talent to speak of and can't hold a note in a bucket when singing (fortunately, the baby isn't very discerning!). But I like stories, and the jack-of-all trades bit appealed. I'm not sure if it fits any more--I never thought I'd actually sit down and specialize in something, but here I am with almost-a-phd in economics, with an unintended specialty in the economics of cars. Did not see that one coming. I probably won't bother changing it though.

I don't think there's anything special about Ryan, but my parents chose initials for me and my brother to honor their grandparents, who had passed away by the time we were born. So the "R" comes from my mother's-father's-mother, Rose. We liked the tradition, and Miriam's initials (MB) are from Dani's grandparents, Millie and Bruce.

You singing to Miriam might be the cutest mental image I've had all week!

I think of you as an appealing storyteller and pretty universally talented, so. It must be working. Despite your expertise on the economics of cars. (How did that happen?)

Out of curiosity, what was your mother's father's father's name? I only know it must have started with an H.

Only because you haven't heard it ;)

My random expertise came from a (long-since abandoned) research idea about cash-for-clunkers programs, inspired by a blog post I read. Then, about a year and a half ago, I got a massive, amazing set of car-related data, and it took a life of it's own.

Harry, I believe. There are a bunch of Harrys on that side of the family.

I didn't realize the story behind the unicorn was so elaborate!

The first time your parents heard the name was in an Australian movie and the name made such an impression that they used it for you, but they don't remember the movie? That's really... interesting. And I feel like it says something about how we're drawn to names because they *sound* cool.
