First off, bureacracies in general, student governments included, always consider their own hide before anything else. Or at least, that's been my experience.
Secondly, I think that the student government should sign it but if they don't, the petition could still circulate around Princeton in some fashion and still have a similar impact I would presume. I'm not sure how much is to be gained by having the USG back it if you have thousands of signatures.
Thirdly, the "larger moral issue" you speak of is being inadvertently addressed with this roundabout discussion about the role of the student government. I don't think anyone would say that it isn't the place of the sudent government to endorse things that are good and things that are right. So really what's being discussed is if homosexuallity is right or wrong. It's the nature of politics to speak of something by not speaking about it. What can you say?
