For those of you unaware, I am back in Edinburgh, this time for a much longer haul. Two years. I am already majorly regretting my decision to come back in winter time. Just in time for the coldest start to winter in the last bazillion years. Please marvel at my timing. I would kill for a day above 15 degrees, hell above 3 would do me right now ( Read more... )

"There was a lot more to it but the end result was her telling Robert he was crap if him didn't come and practically everyone guilt tripping me into convincing him to go."

I am familiar with this type of situation. As a stepmom, you're always supposed to suck it up and non-stepmom's will rarely ever side with you.

At least the kids love you, good job! :-D

I'm hoping that the pressure will be off next time something happens because she admitted to quite a few people that the Christmas episode was done out of spite/jealousy/whatever. SO she's shot herself in the foot there.

But the main thing is I'm off to a good start with the kids.

:o That would be horrific every night. HOw on earth do you get comfortable?

At least this year it's my choice where I go for Christmas. I think I'd like to be in the same timezone as my family.

Wow, have I missed a lot in your life the past year. So, are you married now? To a Scotsman with 2 kids and a nasty ex-wife? Or are you not married yet? (I'm confused about the 2 year stay, rather than permanent residency as a wife.) And how old are the kids?

My sister-in-law, who is also a step-mom and has dealt with lots of these issues, goes to a website for blended families where she can discuss these things with others in similar situations. It's probably US-based, but if you want me to get information about it for you, let me know. I'm sure, actually, that there are lots of on-line support groups for step-moms, which might be really helpful for you.

No, not married. Mum and I did a tour through the UK and Ireland and I hooked up with our Tour Director. That was in June 07, he came out to Oz in October 07, then I went to his in January 08 but had to come back to Oz in April. He came to get me in October and we've been here since mid November.

Because we haven't got any plans for getting married for a year or two I have no basis for applying for residency. Instead I have a working holiday visa which lets me stay for two years and then I have to go back to Oz and apply for a spousal VISA if things are still going well.

Part of her problem is that she isn't an ex-wife, they were never married. Robert was a tad self destructive in his earlier years and got involved in a couple of relationships which made him miserable so she doesn't like it that he is genuinely happy with me. Meghan is 13 and Ronan is 10.

Lotje linked me to a website earlier in the year that is actually quite helpful. Nothing beats a good lj rant though. ;)

Thanks for the update! I'm a bit relieved, because I was thinking, "omg, have I really been so horribly out of touch that I didn't even know Ren got married!!!" Whew. Just mildly out of touch, so there's still hope for me after all.

So... does Robert have a gorgeous Scottish accent, or what?

Indeed he does, he has been local to Edinburgh most of his life but was also in the highlands, so it's delightful. There are a few people who would disagree though, apparently Scotsman are difficult to understand. *shrugs*

Will he really not eat if he's starving? I suppose at least he's got strength of character. Sort of.

I haven't seen it myself, but I have been assured he has done it a few times. He does just refuse things until you offer him something with a ridiculously high sugar content though.
