Kirk/USS Enterprise | ST: TOS | G | a taste of perfection

I fell in love the way you fall into a coma: unexpectedly, and all at once.

Sometimes when Kirk thinks back to that day, it almost feels unreal to calculate how many years have passed. He was, what, nineteen years old? Still a green cadet trying to find his place in Starfleet, unfit to be called a soldier. He was on field duty, and against the orders of his instructor, he sneaked to the landing pad. Word had been spreading like wildfire around campus, a starship is coming. The day arrived and his heart was racing, having no idea what he was running for.

How he managed to loiter around the landing pad long enough without being discovered he would never know. All he remembered from that day was the breath caught in his chest as the starship slowly descended, the wind blowing through his hair, the sting in his eyes. And above all, her.

She was beautiful in every way impossible. How could something so massive be so intricate, so magnificently powerful yet completely compliant to men’s control? He was ashamed, then, to be in her presence, overwhelmed by the fear that he would never be good enough to serve aboard a ship like her. He had never felt so small, so ill-fated but fortunate to have found her.

So he ran out the way he came, back to his quarters, his hands shaking even as he was lying down in his bed. He closed his eyes and she was there, silent still, and he was in awe, once again.

Since that day, he wanted nothing more than to be hers, and he didn’t even learn her name.

Sometimes when Kirk thinks about his starship, he can’t imagine why other starships exist in this world.
