here Personality:
Shinjiro is many things, among them delinquent, upperclassman, comrade, and murderer. He doesn't go to school, he hangs in the back alleys, he fights, he's someone normal people would never think of associating with. And that's fine by Shinji, actually. He isolated himself on purpose, made himself into what he is on purpose, drove his friends away on purpose. And even after he rejoined SEES, there was still a certain distance that he kept between himself and the others, save for a select two.
Roughness aside, Shinji really isn't a bad guy. He has a foul mouth, he can hold his own in a fight, he doesn't hesitate to tell people off even if they're concerned about him. But all of that is only because he's afraid. He's afraid of getting close to people and afraid of himself for what he can do, what would happen if his persona gets out of control one more time. And he kills himself because of that, taking suppressants to reign in the monster inside him so he doesn't take another life.
There is very little that holds meaning in Shinjiro's life. Not himself, not his health, nothing he owns. His room is empty except for the barest of necessities: a bed that he can sleep on, a desk he doesn't use, a wardrobe he doesn't stock. He lives to atone for his crime, allowing himself to be eaten away by guilt. It's part of what kills him - the knowledge that he killed Ken's mother, the guilt that stays with him for years until the day he dies. The life he has after that October 5th is a life of little purpose. He lived day by day, revisiting the site where Ken’s mother was killed, taking lethal drugs that would kill him sooner or later because he’s afraid.
But as much as Shinji doesn’t value his own life, he cares for others quite a bit, even if he doesn’t usually show it. It’s ironic how he talks about how everyone should eat nutritionally balanced meals, gets worried about Akihiko’s nutritional intake, about his fighting form, about everyone else’ progress, but at the same time ruining his own health in secret. It was never about him. He plotted his path and he knew he was going to die the moment Akihiko told him about Ken joining SEES. So he worries about other people instead, in his awkward, unpolished way of his.
Entirely unused to receiving or giving affection, Shinjiro often does not know how to react when it happens. With Akihiko, it’s simpler. Akihiko isn’t deterred because of Shinjiro’s flippancy. Akihiko keeps coming back (even though Shinji doesn’t want him to), and Akihiko would never stop being his friend. He doesn’t have to pretend to be nice, he doesn’t have to treat Aki special because they’re friends. They go way back and they understand each other more than anyone. To Shinjiro, Akihiko is more important than he shows. After all, the only reason why Shinji joined SEES in the beginning was because Akihiko was in it, despite not being able to fully control his persona. Their relationship is very much akin to brothers, reflected even in their personas - the twins Castor and Polydeuces.
And this personality section would be incomplete if his relationship with the female protagonist isn’t mentioned. Aside from Akihiko, she is the next most important person in his life. He’s bewildered and attracted to her all at once, swept away by her cheerfulness and enthusiasm. It’s the first and the only time in his life that he opened up to someone that much, that quickly. He’s weak to her smiles, weak to her persistence, so much that it seems contrary to his very character. But that’s the power of the protagonist, after all. Shinjiro isn’t any different from a normal guy. He’s got urges, he’s got an imagination. And at the same time he believes there’s no future between them. That he’s not good enough for her, and he can’t give her anything aside from their time together and a watch as a memento. He was going to die, after all. He loves her, so he would rather bring his feelings to the grave.
Extra:
Character Abilities: Shinji is capable of using his Persona Castor in combat via his Evoker. He excels in physical attacks. However, unlike the rest of SEES, Shinji doesn't have full control of his persona and has to use a suppressant to keep it in leash. The suppressant is very harmful and due to its effect, his lifespan has been drastically shortened.
Possessions: Nothing of note. Besides his clothes, there's a bottle of suppressants he keeps on his person.
