• Akemi Homura: "Homura-chan" to Madoka by request, "transfer student" to Sayaka, "Akemi Homura" to Kyubey. Enemy to Mami, reluctant ally to Kyoko. No longer human. No friend to anyone, anymore.
• Kaname Madoka: Almost always "Madoka," sometimes "Kaname Madoka." Her one true friend. The focus of a wish, and subject of a promise. Blunt and cool. Protective. Always save the this girl.
• Tomoe Mami: Formerly "Mami-san," now "Tomoe Mami." The former part still hurts, but she can't save everyone, and Mami can't handle the truth. Always dies. Cultivated distance.
• Sakura Kyoko: Understands the world of magical girls better than most. Eats a lot. "Sakura Kyoko." Sometimes an ally, thus is given more information, but never the whole story.
• Miki Sayaka: Might have been "Sayaka-san" once, now just "Miki Sayaka." Too naïve to be a magical girl. Usually suspicious. Always becomes Oktavia. Distance, and disdain.
• Kyubey: Manipulative little alien, "Incubator." Rival in the battle for Madoka's soul. Kills him sometimes, but he comes back. Quiet, unforthcoming.
I. As If We Met in a Dream
Homura: My name is Akemi Homura. Nice to meet you all.
Classmate A: Akemi-san, where did you go to school before?
Homura: A Christian school in Tokyo.
Classmate B: Were you in any clubs? Did you do any sports? How about art?
Homura: I never joined any.
Classmate C: Your hair's really pretty. What shampoo do you use?
Homura: I'm sorry… I guess I was really nervous. I don't feel very well. Would you mind if I went to the nurse's office?
Classmate A: Oh, then I'll take you there.
Classmate C: I'll go, too!
Homura: No, don't worry about me. I'll ask the person in charge. Kaname Madoka-san, you're the health office for this class, right?
Madoka: I, uh…
Homura: Could you take me to the nurse's office?
Madoka: Um, how do you know I'm the health officer?
Homura: Saotome-sensei told me.
Madoka: Oh, I see. The nurse's office is…
Homura: This way, right?
Madoka: Huh? Yeah, but… You… just kind of seem like you know the way. A-Akemi-san?
Homura: You can call me Homura.
Madoka: Homura-chan?
Homura: What is it?
Madoka: I, uh… That's a unique name. No, I didn't mean it was weird… I-I think it's cool!
Homura: Kaname Madoka, do you value your current way of life? Your family, your friends… Do you think dearly of them?
Madoka: I, uh… I do. My family, my friends… I love them. They really mean a lot to me.
Homura: Is that true?
Madoka: It is. Why wouldn't it be?
Homura: I see. If that's true, then you mustn't ever think of trying to become someone else. If you do, you'll lose everything. You just need to stay Kaname Madoka, like you have so far.
Madoka: Homura-chan?
Homura: Move away from him.
Madoka: B-but he's hurt. N-no, don't hurt him!
Homura: This has nothing to do with you.
Madoka: But he called for me! I heard him telling me to save him!
Homura: I see.
Homura: (Witch barrier appears) Out of all the times…
Mami: The Witch ran away. If you want to take it down, you'll need to chase after it quickly. I'll give the Witch to you this time.
Homura: The Witch isn't what I'm interested in.
Mami: You don't seem to understand what's going on here. I'm saying, I'll let you go. I think we would both like to avoid any unnecessary trouble.
