History: Wikia

Personality: Nagisa is a sweet girl with a huge heart. She cares and looks out for absolutely everyone, whether they’re close friends, casual companions, or even complete strangers. No matter who they are, she wants them to be happy, and as long as they are, she is too. Even if it means giving up some of her own happiness, she’ll do anything for them. Some may take advantage of her for this. However, she tries to brush those situations aside as long as those people are content. If they aren’t, Nagisa may even put the blame onto herself, partially due to her having little confidence.

On that note, her low confidence levels make her very shy and timid. She really isn’t one to just run up to someone and start a conversation, nor to even say hello to them in, for that matter. She needs some help to do so. Tomoya Okazaki’s assistance is responsible for the friends and companions she has now. In the beginning of the anime while eating, Nagisa notices a group of girls standing on a building but doesn’t do anything. It wasn’t until Tomoya told her to wave that she did so, but it ended up being too late, anyway. Sitting in the same spot after being absent for a few days due to being sick, she spots Tomoya. After much fidgeting and hesitation, she smiles lightly and shyly waves to him, showing that she was trying to start coming out of that shell.

Despite her not being able to ever participate in or even see a play, Nagisa is very fond of theater. Her constant illnesses kept her from being able to go to school much, so she wasn’t able to join the drama club there. Even if she did, she’d just fall behind due to her plethora of absences. By the time she decided to give it a shot, she was disappointed to find out that the club had actually disbanded because of the members leaving the school. With theater being so important to her though, she was determined to re-establish the club with the help of Tomoya and the others.

Another interest of hers which is quite possibly bigger than that of theater is her obsession with the Dango Daikazoku mascots. She finds them to be the absolute most adorable blobs things ever and is often heard humming or singing the theme song for it. They were also drawn all over her drama club advertisements, which were taken down due to it being too late to post poster ads for clubs around the school. One time, she got into an argument with Fuko Ibuki over which was cuter: The Big Dango Family or starfish. Tomoya and Youhei Sunohara were convinced that the debate would go on forever since Nagisa and Fuko were so stubborn on their beliefs towards their beloved mascots. Being the compromising girl that she is, however, Nagisa decided that dangos and starfish were on equal levels of cuteness. (Though, naturally, she still loves dangos more.)

Strengths:

Physical: She really doesn’t possess any kind of special physical strength. She’s just your ordinary, human teenage girl. If anything, her body is rather weak, as she often goes through prolonged periods of extreme illness.

Mental/Emotional: Nagisa has a lot of determination, especially when it comes to helping others. Though she may need a bit of a push initially, after then, she’ll do whatever it takes to make others happy, even if it means risking her own happiness. As long as they’re happy, she’s happy. That’s all she needs. That doesn’t necessarily go for solely people close to her either, but for people in general as well. It makes her a likable person though and, in turn, gives her more companions.

Piggybacking on that attribute is the fact that Nagisa works hard and doesn’t give up throughout her years in school. Despite the fact that she had to repeat a couple of years, she continues to maintain good grades and attend school when physically fit to do so. At one point, she even recklessly tried to push herself and manage to go to class even though she was ill. That of course failed and ended with Tomoya having to carry her back home though.

Weaknesses:

Physical: As mentioned previously, Nagisa is physically weak; Ever since she was five years old, she frequently contracted an illness that would last for very long periods of time. So long that they actually resulted in her having to repeat a year in school (which is why she is older than the rest of the group), and eventually having to do so once again. Though these times seem to pop up spontaneously, they are usually seen throughout the series due to normal sickness-causing factors such as stress, standing out in the rain for too long, etc.

Mental/Emotional: Nagisa has little self-confidence and often needs a little push to keep her going throughout the day, or to just do things in general such as reestablishing the theater club. She developed a habit of telling herself the names of food (like anpan, as seen when she is first introduced) that she plans to eat in order to motivate herself.

She is very emotional and is easily moved by things, whether they are positive or negative. Holding back tears isn’t exactly something she can do very well, if at all; she’s often seen crying throughout the story. Sometimes her emotions even act up so much that it affects her physical state. For example, when she found out about the story of Tomoya’s shoulder injury, her distress from feeling guilty (and from just the fact that she was standing out in the rain for such a long period of time) caused her to collapse and become sick.

Things like pranks, jokes, and sarcasm tend to go right over Nagisa’s head. She falls for them easily, or just doesn’t catch them at all. There was one time where Sunohara was constantly pestering Tomoya to play basketball, and Tomoya claimed that it was because he was madly in love with him. Being easily fooled, she fell for it and made the situation even more awkward by unexpectedly pretending that Tomoya was her boyfriend, causing her to become extremely flustered.

Samples

First Person: E-eh? What is this? Is this a journal? It looks like one, but… U-um… [There's only one thing to do; Draw dangos!]

Dango, dango, dango, dango. Dango Daikazoku-Oh! D-did I just press a button? This is a really strange journal… I wonder what happens if I press this button? [Click. The singing was played back.] I-it recorded my voice? Well, at least now it’s like I’m not completely alone, right? [With a forced smile, she let it replay once more and sang along.] Dango, dango, dango, dango. Dan…go… Dai…ka… [Her expression fell and tears began to well up in her eyes.]

I-I miss everyone… Where am I? Where is everyone? A-are they okay…? I-I want to go home and see them again… But… I don’t know where they are, or where home is…

Third Person: It was a serene scene; the air was cool and calm, and the only sounds heard were the quiet rustling of the grass from the small breeze, and the light breathing of Nagisa in her sleep. She was curled up in a ball, one hand tucked neatly under her cheek and the other resting right beside it. The plain, white knee-length dress that she was wearing was definitely not something that she was wearing previously, or even owned, for that matter. In fact, from the last thing that she remembered, she was wearing her school uniform, which was in no way similar to this dress at all.

That wasn’t the only thing that was different, either. When Nagisa finally woke up, she just stayed in her position, blinking and staring at her surroundings. She didn’t recognize them. She wasn’t sure if she was even supposed to though, since it seemed like some sort of dream. Everything just looked way too peaceful. It was almost unreal. The only thing keeping her from completely believing that theory was the weird sensation she felt on her back. Had she been dreaming, she wouldn’t have felt anything, right? But this wasn’t the case. Something felt different, odd, and… feathery? It was the kind of feathery that one would associate with wings. Sure enough, when she sat up and checked, there was a pair of pure white wings fluttering on her back. She just stared at them, confused about how she was supposed to react. This all seemed so unreal, and she couldn’t get over that.

Finally, she was able to collect some of her thoughts and speak up. “W-where am I? Is anyone here?”

She looked around. There didn’t seem to be anyone around. Everything was so silent. As she hugged her knees while sitting, she noticed a journal nestled into the grass. It looked like an ordinary journal, but something seemed rather odd about it. Prodding at it with her finger, a maelstrom of thoughts swirled throughout her head.

Where was she? Why was she here? How did she even get here? Where is everyone? Are her friends okay?

For the first time, muttering a name of a pastry didn’t exactly seem like something that would comfort her at all. Worried and missing her dear friends, she sighed and murmured meekly, “I-I… I want to go home.”
