The Hard Line - Episode 1

Sep 09, 2011 11:22

The show opens to a shot of a busy strip mall in Sierra, and WAYNE walking in from the left. The camera follows him as he walks across the screen.

WAYNE: Solena. The place you know, and love, for being green, peaceful, a good all round place to raise a family. But what if you knew that it was all just a facade, a cover for something dark, and dangerous, lurking in the night? A Society so criminal, no one dares speak out about it. Until now.

Wayne finally stops his walking, and faces the camera straight on.

WAYNE: I'm Wayne Gale, and this - is The Hard Line.

OPENING SEQUENCE PLAYS

Cue montage of some of the more upmarket, familiar, safe looking places of Solena throughout the passing of a day. The last shot is at sunset over the city skyline, with a vibrant orange sky.

WAYNE (VO): In my fifteen years of reporting in Palestine, Israel and around the USA, I've never come across a place like Solena

Pause as we see a shot of a flock of birds

WAYNE (VO):  It's known and respected worldwide for its green energy, peaceful nature, and advances in technology. So imagine my surprise to find out that underneath this exterior we all know and love, is a malignant cancer, just waiting to spread into your home, and into your family.

The shot fades into one of the camera panning across to Wayne standing on a street in Sierra.

WAYNE: I'm standing in Millers street, in the quiet end of Sierra. Beautiful, safe, a nice place to come if you want some uninterrupted shopping, and a day with the family.

Wayne begins to walk to the left of the screen, the camera begins to track with him

WAYNE: But right next door, tucked away, is the huge, rotting carcass of Corona...

The scenery behind Wayne looks more and more overrun with plants and decay. Wayne stops walking in front of a building with broken windows, and the camera keeps moving until he is centre screen.

WAYNE: ...And that rot could be beginning to spread.

We're now treated with a short montage of Corona as the light fades.

WAYNE (VO): Forgotten and overrun by plantlife, wildlife and the homeless, Corona is a place Solena would rather not remember.
We took pictures to you, the public on the street.

The following vox pop shots are taken on a sunny day in Sierra.

OLD LADY: Well, goodness! ...I had heard it was a bit run down, I didn't realise it was so bad!

MAN WITH A BEARD AND SUNGLASSES: That... That really stops ya in your tracks, don't it
(he laughs)

RATTY LOOKING TEENAGER: Does anyone even care about that place?

MIDDLE AGED TROPHY WIFE ON SHOPPING TRIP: I'm just glad I live on the other side of the city. I wouldn't go anywhere near there. Not even in broad daylight. The government needs to do something about it.

Fade back into the Corona montage.

WAYNE (VO): And in Corona, there could be something even more sinister and underhanded than we ever expected, lurking in the shadows.

Cut to Wayne in front of a burnt out car, which is missing a side view mirror. It is dark, the scene is lit with halogen lights. The shadows are harsh.

WAYNE: Cars line the streets in Corona, like littered reminders of an age long gone. But this car behind me is one-of-a-kind in this vehicle graveyard.  We found it while out here on investigation and...

Wayne steps over to lift up the hood, showing parts everywhere and charred remains. The full extent of the damage can be seen.

WAYNE: ...It could be one of the many left homeless from the collapse of SOL used it for warmth - or it was burnt as a sign in some Secret Society plot. We don't know, but what we do know - is that it was burnt up on purpose.

Clips of later on in the show play underneath the following voiceover.

ANNOUNCER (VO): After the break: Wayne Gale talks with a man who heard Society members, and the shocking story of a boy out for revenge.

AD BREAK
TITLE SCREEN

Fade in as a montage of Solena continues.

WAYNE (VO): We've been tracking suspicious happenings all over Solena, from burnt out cars to whisperings of a Secret Society.

An establishing shot of a the network building is shown, followed by a shot of Peter Grey - an aging businessman - walking into an interview room and shaking hands with Wayne, under the following Voiceover

WAYNE (VO): We were contacted by Peter Grey, a man who says he heard people talking about this Society, and he could be the first person to be able to shed light on this conspiracy.

Shots mostly go between Wayne and Peter as the interview goes, sometimes Wayne will do something like nod or lean forward etc. Peter looks shaky and nervous.

WAYNE: Thanks for your time, Peter. Now, where were you when you heard these... People talking?

The screen fades into a shot of the bookshop is shown as Peter talks, followed by a shot of a studio set made to look like a bookshop. The word 'dramatization' sits in the bottom of the screen, and a man dressed in a suit is looking through the shelves. Then it switches back to the interview.

PETER: I was in a bookshop Kairos, on a break from work. I like to go there and have a browse every now and then, they have some good deals sometimes. It's usually pretty busy, and I just drown the noise out, but one thing caught my ear-

WAYNE: Really? What was that?

PETER: It was a woman's voice. I can't remember the exact words... They were talking about some sort of Secret Society.

WAYNE: That's fine, just as you remember it.

PETER: She said something like... "Do you know anything about the Society or its Games". Something like that.

WAYNE: Did you get a look at this woman? Remember anything about her?

PETER: No. I got distracted. My beeper went off and I had to leave again.

WAYNE:  How can we even trust what you heard if you were so... Distracted?

PETER: Well- look. I know what I heard. There were people talking about a Society, and they were serious about whatever games they were talking about.

Wayne looks into the camera as the shot comes back to him.

WAYNE: Words... To think on. We'll be back after the break.

Clips of later on in the show play underneath the following voiceover.

ANNOUNCER (VO): After the break: The shocking story of a boy out for revenge.

AD BREAK
TITLE SCREEN

There is a shot of a dock, a single boat floats next to a mooring.

WAYNE (VO): This peaceful dock was once the scene of a famously bloody shootout.

Cut to pictures and headlines relating to Hibari's father and his death.

WAYNE (VO): Sure, he was a big name in the underworld, and a crook who belonged behind bars. But someone decided to take Mr. Hibari's life into their own hands. We're told they were a rival gang, but some say they were a part of something else... Something far more menacing.

The images begin to fade to black

WAYNE (VO):  Years on, and his son can no longer sit back and let the Society that ripped his family apart go on.

The screen now shows Kyouya Hibari, standing in front of a tree, tonfas on his belt, on a sunny day. His voice is apathetic, but the music underneath makes it sound cold and calculating.

KYOUYA: This society has done well to remain unknown, but nothing can remain hidden forever

A series of fast shots of alleys in Corona play, giving a sense of action with fast paced music.

WAYNE (VO): Out for revenge on those that killed his father, young Kyouya Hibari has no sympathy for those involved with this threat.

Back to the shot of Kyouya, this time a little closer to him. The shot cuts in again after he speaks, and the video is slowed down as a predatory grin appears on his face.

KYOUYA: Those who are thinking of causing a disturbance in my district I'll beat to within an inch of their lives.

The following voice over plays over the still image of the grinning Kyouya.

WAYNE (VO): He may just be young, but this boy is about to teach the Society a lesson they won't soon forget.

We're now back with Wayne on the streets, talking again with the camera.

WAYNE: Just like Kyouya Hibari is on the streets seeking justice where the police cannot reach, we too will continue to hunt this Society, and expose them for the world to see their dirty dealings. I'm Wayne Gale, and I'll see you next week, on - The Hard Line.
