Reach out and touch science

Dec 07, 2009 08:36

I was perusing Something Awful and stumbled upon a thread called "What are the 'truths' you've learned about the major you've chosen?"

And someone was kind enough to post this about English )

It's really sad that the "hard" sciences look down on the lib arts so much-- historians get the same thing: we totally think scientists are brainy and cool, but they think we're boring old dust-gatherers who can't-- and/or won't-- appreciate technology. Oh ho! I say. We understand and appreciate it even MORE because we know how and why it came to be and, more than likely, exactly how it is going to end because chances are someone else tried something like it at some point in the past ( ... )

lol! Linguistics is difficult in languages you're overly familiar with. I mean, most of the time the way we say things and write things is so ingrained into our minds that we don't know why we do it. Learning those things is super hard! I love grammar rules, though... I love sentence diagrams. I love things like determiners and past participles and adverbial phrases... I could go on and on ( ... )

LMAO, that's crazy talk xD Sort of a good point, though. It's funny that most people never think about that kind of thing, about the actual language they're using-- I mean, I guess they don't; I'd never thought about the theory behind my own language until it was brought to my attention by someone else. I've never been good with theory though, for any reason xD It just makes my brain feel like it's in knots. The only kind I could ever interpret correctly was historical (which is the most linear, amirite?) so it's probably good that it's my field. Anyway.
Oh, speaking of Hitler's language, I've always thought that German is almost hilariously unsubtle... it's like the opposite of Japanese.

Haha, German is probably one of the least romantic/least musical sounding of all languages. Unless you like that sort of loud grunting kind of music - which is what Germany is famous for producing, right?
