"I don't want to go out with you anymore."

Hasshi felt a knot inside his throat. He had tried his best to be the best boyfriend ever, buying Kanna whatever she wanted and listening to her ranting about the little things that annoyed her. He sent her messages every minute and called her whenever he felt that she looked sad the last time he saw her, even to the point of being clingy. So he couldn't understand "Why?"

"Don't pretend that's nothing's wrong!" he heard her scream out at him before feeling a splash of melon soda (from the exact same can of melon soda that he'd bought her from the vending machine earlier) hit his face and trickle down to his neck and shirt. "This is not the kind of relationship that I wanted. I thought dating you would make me more popular but what happened to me?"

And Hasshi remembered the little incidents he'd seen and heard about, but always ignored. Kanna emerging drenched from the girls' toilets, her face and arms bruised. Kanna carrying her desk upstairs from a downstairs rubbish bin to their third floor classroom. Kanna's vandalised shoes, books, and school uniforms, which he'd all replaced by buying her new ones.

Was Kanna bullied because of him? He'd already turned down a couple of confessions, coming from both senpai and kouhai alike. Kanna had been the only one from his class who had ever confessed to him. He'd always known her as a cheerful girl who had a lot of friends, did those friends turn against her because of him?

"I don't want to break up with Kanna," he whispered, reaching out to take her hand, but he was already alone under the cherry tree where they'd always have their lunch together.

A lone soccer ball bounced by, almost hitting his face. But Hasshi thought he wouldn't have cared if it did hit him. He could see Totsuka-senpai from the soccer club shouting something at him; probably to bring him the ball, but he didn't care. Kanna was gone.

"Yo," said Totsuka-senpai, who had run towards Hasshi completely unnoticed. "Girl troubles?" he asked in a failed attempt at a casual tone. It had sounded more like awkward.

"Senpai," Hasshi began slowly.

"Mm-hm?" Totsuka-senpai replied from behind him, getting the soccer ball from where it had landed. His teammates were already yelling at him from the soccer field.

"I learned two things today," Hasshi declared with a small smile, taking the clean handkerchief Totsuka was handing him. "That girls can be cruel if you don't take good care of them, and melon soda really stings if you get it in your eyes."
