The smell of fresh-baked apple pie flooded her senses completely, and for a moment, she seemed to be lost, in another time and place.
She could see herself, sitting in the Kent kitchen, at the table, laughing and smiling as her best friend handed her a plate with a slice of a hot apple pie he'd just pulled out of the oven.
"Chloe?"
The Doctor's voice jerked her out of her daze, and she suddenly remembered that she wasn't in Smallville, and it wasn't 2009. She was in Memphis in 1957, and she and the Doctor were on their way to see Elvis in concert. He had been anxious to take her on this trip, because the last time he'd attempted this with another companion, it hadn't worked, and they'd ended up back in London.
"Hmm?" She looked up at the Doctor with wide, dreamy eyes, and she saw something in his face soften.
"You miss him, don't you?" he asked, his voice hushed.
Her head lowered, as if she was embarrassed, and she nodded slowly.
"Then I'll take you back to him. Soon." He made his promise, reaching out to gently touch her hand. "One more trip, and we're done, yeah?"
She nodded again, looking back up at him. "Yeah."
Without a word, he nodded back at her, and put an arm around her, embracing her.
It was almost over.
