I just went outside to do some work in the pond and mosquitoes devoured my feet and ankles. Ouch ( Read more... )

I'm reminded that I want to turn the 10gal tank that is home to our small green tree frog into a proper terrarium, with a 'pond' on one side and a muddy 'shoreline' for him to romp in. Ooo! Mudskippers! Have to make sure they're compatible, but they could be good companions. Right now he's totally lost in that tank, he's so small.

I must ask: what kind of lighting setup do you have for him? And do you have lots of branches and etc for him to climb?

My ex had a pretty good setup for her green hylas; she had about three inches of water in the bottom of the tank, with large rocks making some islands, and then lots of branches and growing plants for them to climb on and hide in. A filter made a gentle, non-splashy current. She misted them every day to make sure the humidity was high enough.

If you do make it half-aquatic you could put an aquatic frog in the watery half. She had a fire-bellied toad in the water of hers.

Do you have/would you like some moneywort for your terrarium? I can bring you some of that, along with the purple heart tradescantia, when we next come to Austin.

Goodness, you know much more about terraria than I do! Mr. Frog's setup could use much improvement, frankly. He was a gift from a friend, so we tried to duplicate her setup, which had rocks, a large piece of wood, and peat covering the floor. It also had a water bowl. I added a potted ivy to our setup and I covered the mesh grate partially with some saran wrap so some of the humidity would stay in and he wouldn't get cold (cage is really not in an optimal place right now: drafty). It has a hygrometer and it stays at about 50%. We mist him and fill his water bowl and feed him with crickets, which themselves are appropriately fed with cricket food ( ... )
