The end of the stillpond

The other day, the stillpond was down to only a few inches of water. It was pretty murky and although I looked, I couldn't find any fish. I figured that they were all dead or gone, and that if they were any left, the fabled toughness of the mosquito fish would mean they could survive chlorinated water. So I let it fill from the hose. Goldfish are unfortunately pretty much the messiest fish one can own, except maybe oscars. I don't know much about ponds so I'm not quite sure what to do about it.
