Pond Life

Things are improving in the pond. This morning Al was talking to me again. Also, when I fed him, the mfish came out to eat, which they had not done since the goldies moved in. The largest, adult mfish are really cute, with frilly fins, and very tame, but when the goldies first moved in they hid for a few days. Big fish are a little scary when ( Read more... )

There is blue-green algae in the pond, too, which worries me a bit- I will have to look into that.

I love reading these entries, but honestly, this is part of why I don't have fish. Dogs and cats just seem so simple compared to this.

Heh heh. I love my pond so much. I wish you could experience it. I don't really worry much about this algae, I just don't want to get anything toxic, you know? The goldies ate the blue-green stuff and have not died so I am breathing easy.

It's not really difficult, and it is pretty simple once it's all set up and cared for. The pond has become a hobby, but not a pain in the ass.

I won't lie: sometimes it is a paint in the ass, but the times that I enjoy it far outweigh the PITA times. It is so... joyful to be a pondkeeper. There really is no other word. It's more than fulfilling and interesting... so much more!

Speaking of the mfish, I think yours are a different kind of fish than mine. Mine look like plain mollies, and the ones I saw today from your pond are much shinier and have a silver belly. I think they may just be different subspecies. Yours look like Gambusia Alfinii, and I think mine are Gambusia Nobilis, because they have the stripe.

Damn, that makes me wish we could get the ones I gave you out of your pond... G. nobilis are endangered.

Could you possibly have G. holbrookii? They are commonly sold as mosquitofish too. http://filaman.ifm-geomar.de/Photos/ThumbnailsSummary.php?ID=4521
