[ The man who appears on the screen is approximately in his mid-twenties. His expression is carefully neutral, and he seems to have taken the time to find somewhere to sit down before turning the camera on. When he speaks, it's in a voice that suggests he's used to recording messages for complete strangers.I get the sense that this is standard ( Read more... )

[ Just a raised eyebrow at first and then dead-pan: ]

I'm sorry. Where am I? What's going on? What is this place?

[ Just for humoring, Mouse flicks the feed on his end of the line and delivers his usual delighted smile. ]

Better.

[ Gregor smiles back, but it's restrained as per usual. ]

Happy to be of service. The alternative was demanding to be taken to your leader, I suppose.

I don't think we're located on any starchart.

I didn't want to assume since it's almost impossible to tell from the ground, during the middle of the day, without a chart to actually compare to.

Mostly I say that because from what I understand we're technically not located in the universe.

For the sake of clarification, is that the known universe or just any universe I care to think of?

Rather efficient, aren't you?

You're neither home, nor anywhere near home. Call it another universe.

Efficient, maybe. I'd say more a successful and practiced multi-tasker, but the results can sometimes be the same.

Or they can in my universe, anyway. The rules here could be different. I guess I should just be thankful there's still gravity.

And accustomed to surprises.

We're still on some kind of world, false or not. But you've been to a planet without gravity?

Not a planet, thankfully, no, though I've heard rumours about gravity hiccups during terrforming. I was forced to train in null-grav when I was in school and never learned to enjoy it.

THIS IS A PLACEHOLDER BUT I CAN'T MISS THIS prefers_chess December 11 2010, 19:38:23 UTC
Given that prisons rarely show up on cartographic models and starcharts, it is hardly surprising that you don't recognize it.

[ Gregor sounds alarmed, which, given that this is Gregor, comes off as just mildly more alert than usual. ]

Have I really ended up in a prison again?

Do you frequent prisons often?

Only once. And it was less my fault and more a matter of unexpected local vagrancy laws.

A pleasure to make your acquaintance. I'm from a city called Vorbarr Sultana, which I'm led to believe very few people have heard of here.

Afraid so. I'm from England, myself, but that could mean any number of things here.

But at any rate, welcome to the City.
