Focus on using simple language structure for the time being. That's what I did in Japan. People are usually pretty accommodating. subject は object が feeling on the object です。 subject は object を/に/と verb.
The other thing I did was specifically use a word of the day... or a couple words of the day. I'd look it up at the beginning of the day, and figure out how to use it and when to use it, and then proceed to use it during the day :)
I know the feeling in not feeling fast enough. I wish I could say something other than what was said to me, but really... a language is not learned over night. Look at the Japanese... you have to graduate high school to even be able to read the newspaper.
