Whomageddon 4

Jul 05, 2008 03:34

So we're wrapping up Season 4 of the new Doctor Who, and in preparation for the final episode airing today, we're engaging in a rewatching of the entire series, from start to finish, in one sitting. Also Known As: WHOMAGEDDON!!

I shall update as we watch the episodes, with possibly snarky commentary. ( In retrospect, perhaps best behind a cut, yes? )

Does the current Dr. remind you of Richard Hammond at all?

Can't say I've ever even heard of him before now--though the image on Wikipedia does look a bit uncanny.

He's one of the hosts of the equally British show Top Gear. Just like Dr. Who is a show for sci fi nerds and SportsCenter is for sports nerds, Top Gear is a show for auto nerds.

Ah, I see. I'll download and get back to you on it, then.

Ah, but the psychology of it was spot on. Just deadly. Therein lies most of my appreciation of it.

Eh, a lot of the writing is beginning to bore me now. Much is predictable or badly-scripted. (Sorry -- Midnight bothered me. The characters weren't developed enough to make me care if any of them lived.) If I hear another "brilliant!" I'm going to shoot someone. Messiah doc = exceptionally lame. River Song should have been Susan. And I'm tired of this one-companion nonsense -- it's too limited. If anything worked in the finale, it was companion interaction. But even that left much to be desired -- there wasn't time for all of them. Sarah Jane managed some incredible acting with her tiny bit of screen-time. I agree that Rose didn't seem like Rose, and the final solution to her "problem" -- I saw it a mile away. Blegh.

Donna and Jack are still wonderful people.

Jack: I... can't tell you what I'm thinking.

Rebecca & the Steve: It's OK, Jack, you don't need to! ::uncontrollable laughter::

Yeah, I really like what Elisabeth Sladen did on-screen--go Sarah Jane!

Overall, I am glad RTD's done. Rebecca and I had it out over the "love" story for the Doctor, and I am finally settled with the notion, because in the end, he made the only choice he could make. I still don't like it, but now it's over, and good riddance. Rebecca's point was that the Doctor hasn't ever had a story like that, however, so it became almost necessary.

I am also tired of monocompanionism. Some of the best bits of the show were when English and Rose interacted, or Jack and Marpha, or all of the companions and the Doctor. The romp at the end, when everyone (except Jackie, hahaha) piloted the TARDIS, was a real thrill :)
