So I managed to listen to the recording of the McCain/Obama debate after the fact (thanks Cindy!), but we had a sit-down at Ted's for this one, so I got to watch it real-time ( Read more... )

We haven't seen the vp debate yet and I'm already annoyed at the thought of having to listen to more 'nucular' talk.

The first half is on the economy, so it's not for a good hour, but once it hits, it's thrown out left and right. Just...ugh.

It saddens me that no one else in that room had the first idea of why I was pissed off with her using that phrase.

Maybe, yes. I'll ask him today and see what he thinks.

I still can't believe she Godwinned 3 times. It's like the trifecta of fail.

We just chatted about this in the office. He noticed (possibly because I bitched about it), and we're waiting for JP or Maariv or HaEretz to say something about it.

I watched it too and I thought it was interesting. The worst part of Biden's showing was the bluster, which bugged me at certain times and at others I thought it was ok. Palin's performance, though, was profoundly disturbing. It was this fucked up mixture of folksy "ya youbetcha" frances mcdormand in Fargo persona and total ice queen. Even if Biden was fronting pain and regret when he choked up over his dead wife and kid she didn't show an iota of sympathy - just kept on arguing. Clumsily.

Question: do you think Sarah Palin deliberately mispronounces 'nuclear'? I mean, seriously. HOW FUCKING HARD IS IT?!

I mispronounce it all the time. It's a regional dialect issue.

Yes, well, I call shenanigans. :P I'll admit to being a thorough prescriptivist, but I think that however much people want to say it's a regional dialect word doesn't preclude the fact that it's phonetically and intellectually indefensible. I don't mind biting the bullet and saying that you also pronounce it incorrectly :)

Oh, I do attempt to pronounce it correctly. But, having the issue, I'm more inclined to forgive. I feel similarly about grammar misuse. I may correct, but I'm not delighted to pounce upon it in company.

Indeed, but I think part of the reason why these errors persist is that people aren't corrected. Indeed, it might be nicer to forgive, and in common company there's no point in being snarky about every misuse, but we are talking about people who are theoretically leading (or campaigning to lead) the nation. It's just silly to shunt it aside to dialectical issues when the region is the north-central west-eastern United States.
