Jail

Today at work a homeless crackhead stole a bunch of movies and ran out the door.  I wouldn't have chased him, for multiple reasons, but a vigilante-type guy dashed after him and led him at gunpoint back to the store to wait for the cops to come arrest him.  The guy was understandably scared shitless by the vigilante customer (who, by the way, is ( Read more... )

I guess the reality is that the system doesn't think or feel, it simply exists.

It's also a fact that this guy deserves whatever he gets. Can it therefore a good thing to use the system of which we aren't fond to actually do some good, and prove that it can have the occasional triumph?

It may - or may not - be considered a truimph if the thief described gets something which may or may not constitute due punishment

Go to court, but do it because he took from other people and his parasitic nature. Just because he didn't physically hurt anyone this one time doesn't count as a redeeming quality. Who knows what was really going through his mind or what his capabilities are.
If if pleases you, refuse the money... or just get rid of it.

In other news, I'd do the vigilante thing.... just because I'm (secretly) angry at the world and like to take it out on others.

Don't go. The legal system pretty much never makes anything better. There might a situation in which I would go to court against someone, but I can't think of what it would be (other than suing the cops or something).

Its a difficult one. If you go to court, though, it will be because they call you to testify as a witness, and so in fact you are being compelled to go. The System can make you testify, subpoena you, eh? And they can go after you if you refuse to testify. So, I'd say that the burden of deciding whether or not to testify is in a way off you. You can refuse to go, and then be hit with the consequences, but what good does that do you or anybody?

Anyway, those are my muddled thoughts. Best to you, man!
