Audition (not the Takashi Miike film)

I just got back from general auditions from 5 local professional theater companies. This is one of those deals where you show up with 5 headshots and resumes, and you perform 1 or 2 monologues in less than 3 minutes. And THAT'S IT. That's all you get. No cold readings of any scripts with anybody else. Just a scant 3 minutes of your time.

So it's pretty daunting. Especially since these auditions are for the entire season starting in September, 2010 and ending in August, 2011. These 5 theaters (and all professional theaters, as far as I know) herd everyone together at one time to give them the once-over and then pick and choose who to call back for each individual show. They could call me up 6 months from now to read for a show they're doing in February. Until then, I wait.

I'm not just gonna sit around, though. If I don't hear from any of these places, I'll audition for community theater in the area. Not gonna sit by the phone, y'all. It would be cool if I got into something professional though, cuz I'd get paid, which would be a first for me.

Anyway, the audition went well. I performed a comedic monologue from a play I'd never heard of called Love Song by John Kolvenbach. (They have these great books called Best Men's Stage Monologues 2009 etc., which is where I found that little baby.) I read it for a few people before the audition and didn't get much of a reaction. When I did it for the casting folks today, I got quite a bit of laughter, which was unexpectedly awesome.

The actual auditioning experience was really nice. I would consider my audition a success, actually. Yeah. It went well. All the preparation leading up to it was extremely stressful, though, so I'm glad it's over.

We'll see what happens with the callbacks. I'll keep you all posted.
