The whole talking on a cell phone while driving thing

Jun 21, 2010 16:04

I've never been very comfortable talking on a cell phone while driving. A lot of that stems from the fact that my cousin Jessica was killed in a car accident years ago by a guy who was driving while talking on the phone (and who continued talking on the phone for some time after his car had crashed into hers). Still, I've done it on occasion, but ( Read more... )

It bothers me too-and I don't know anyone who actually wrecked while doing it...but your cousin's story should make all of us think twice about it.

I almost name-checked you as the only person I know who's definitely never called me while driving.

That's a very interesting article. Not only do I refuse to answer my cell phone while driving (and I have a Bluetooth), I hardly talk when driving, period. A friend of mine not only talks on his phone while driving but he texts while driving which just scares me. I like how Meyer explained it and agree with it wholeheartedly.

I read the print version of that article, which was not on 17 pages, 3 paragraphs each. I found it much less annoying in the paper.

My ex-girlfriend used to text while driving. Prolly still does. Nothing like taking your eyes off the road and hands off the wheel simultaneously. Dangerous fun for you and all the cars in your path!

On a side note, I just wanted to say that I'm glad you're back. It's been awhile since you've been engaged on LJ, and I've missed your take on things.

Thank you so much! It's good to be back. I spend a lot of time over on Facebook but it lacks the intimacy of LiveJournal. I feel closer to friends over here if that makes any sense.

Suppose it's not at all surprising, but I hate it and loathe it. We have a fancy built-in hands free nav-thingy in the new Jeep and I have to say it makes it feel slightly less dangerous, but the vast majority of my driving these days is in heavy-to-awful traffic. It's not nearly as bad when deridere uses it to call someone when I'm driving because at that point it basically becomes the equivalent of the radio.

I think it depends on your ability to recognize what you are doing at any given instant. I am able to correct for my flat footedness by just remembering to hold my arches up when I walk. If you think about it, that requires an insane amount of ongoing subtle attention; I started doing this over 10 years ago ( ... )

Oh, and TEXTING while driving is beyond stupid.

But I don't think people take JUST DRIVING A CAR seriously enough, cellphones or not. It's only gotten worse over time and it's not just cellphones. People actually understand and know fewer of the laws now than we used to. It's pathetic. We are going around in deadly weapons and couldn't care less about how we're handling them. I'm already a paranoid freak about how I drive. I'm more distracted by people in the car than by people on the phone, I find.
