Pneumothorax. His lung had (literally) sprung a leak and was spilling air into the space between the lung and chest wall (where it has no way to escape). Makes it awfully hard (if not impossible) to breathe.
Ironic thing is that because of that increased pressure on the outside of the lung, it takes more pressure to inflate the lungs via the tube, which increases the chance of springing another leak elsewhere in the lung. Fun, isn't it?
First Aid for the Peds Boards -- is it any good? (As a way of studying for the In-Service exam, which comes up almost right as soon as I arrive. Guess I know what I'm doing with my time after graduation...)
