CHARACTER NAME: Jade Harley
FANDOM: Homestuck
CANON: Directly after
[S] CascadeWHAT THEY LOST: Jade won't be able to use her powers to their full extent! I'll expand on that in the abilities section.
ABOUT THE CHARACTER: So first off, I'm going to start with a sort of SBURB crash course, as it'll make things easier.
SBURB is a video game that interacts directly with the player's environment, allowing them to manipulate it. One player acts as the "server" and one as the "client". Each new client-server connection creates a unique session of the game that is supposed to be independent from all others. In Homestuck, the kids and trolls both do a sort of daisy-chain thing. That is, one player acts as the server for another and the client for a third, making a sort of circle of players. In this way, all of the kids could play in the same session. The goal in the beginning is for the server player to help the client enter the Medium. Basically, playing SBURB destroys your planet, and the only way to survive is to enter the space that SBURB creates, which consists of the Incipisphere and the Medium inside that.
Here is a handy graphic! The Medium consists of Skaia, a sort of concentration of unlimited creative potential, which is orbited by a "land", or planet, for each player, as well as Prospit and Derse. Prospit and Derse wage war over Skaia, and while Prospit will always lose, the players must protect Skaia from being destroyed. If all goes well, they'll create a new universe to live in. So basically, SBURB destroys a planet to create a universe. It's a sort of procreation thing. The trolls are from a session which created the kids' universe, but they were unable to enter into it before it was destroyed.
Each player is also assigned a dreamself on either Prospit or Derse, and can attain god tier and thus serve as gods in their new universe by dying on their quest bed and merging with their dreamself. Prospit dreamers can see the future in Skaia's clouds as Prospit passes through them, while Derse dreamers can communicate with the Horrorterrors, eldritch monsters that haven't been expanded on all that much in canon.
Jade Harley grew up on a remote island in the Pacific. At first, she was raised by her grandfather, who was a world reknowned explorer/inventor/billionaire, and often tried to emulate him. When she was relatively young, though, her grandfather died mysteriously and she was left to be raised by her dog, Becquerel. Bec would turn out to be the First Guardian of Earth, an omnipotent, immortal being charged with protecting the planet and guiding it to its ultimate purpose. Jade spent much of her childhood learning everything she could from her grandfather's papers and books, and taking apart his inventions and trying to fix them or remake them. Before he died, her grandfather also taught her how to use various firearms, but she was best with a sniper rifle.
Jade also suffered from narcolepsy as a child, or so she thought. In reality, this was the troll Vriska toying with her and forcing her to fall asleep from the troll's session. This forced Jade's awakening on Prospit, a planet that existed in the universe SBURB takes place in. As a result, Jade spent a great deal of her life growing up on Prospit, and whenever Prospit passes through Skaia's clouds, she could see visions of the future. Before her grandfather's death, he also built a special robot that Jade could control from her dreams.
As Jade grew up incredibly isolated with only a dog for company for most of her life, she comes off as rather quirky. Her only friends were John, Dave and Rose who she spoke with over an instant messaging client, and her only knowledge of social interactions came from these conversations and watching old TV shows and cartoons. Despite this loneliness, she is pretty much the bubbliest, most cheerful person you will ever meet. She loves making friends and talking to others, and has a tendency to be a bit childish and naive. For most of her session, she was the cheerleader and support of her group, encouraging and leading the others. It was only near the end of the session that she took on a more hands-on role.
She thinks her friends are amazing and brave and the best people ever, and has a tendency to push down her own emotions and put on a brave face, much like the rest of the kids. It's very, very obvious that she does this. She suffers the loss of Prospit, a planet which she had tons of friends and a sort of life on, and doesn't show any grief. When she is forced to shoot Dave, she's obviously distraught and Karkat says she freaked out, but we never see her cry and she obviously doesn't linger on her emotions for long, as she's able to revive him. She also hates the part of herself Jadesprite represents: Ditzy, overemotional and cowardly, and even Karkat, king of self-hatred says she needs to let herself off the hook and give herself a break.
Jade also has a bit of a temper, but it takes quite a bit to get her to snap. This only happens in canon on two occasions: With Karkat and with Jadesprite. While her default demeanor is welcoming and cheerful, on these occasions she can curse and insult with the best of them. In fact, her outburst was enough to shock Karkat, to give you an idea. Unlike some of the other characters, she also seems determined to get their doomed session to succeed. She is adamant about fulfilling her frog breeding responsibilities to create a new universe, and seems unsure when the others tell her Jack is unbeatable.
But because of her general naiviety and sunny personality, some characters (read: Dave) seem to view her as a liability. Dave himself specifically says she "probably just needs protection", which is shown to be pretty much completely wrong. Jade grew up on an island largely by herself, and while Bec protected her, her upbringing was much more troll-like than human-like. As such, Jade is very independent and more than capable of taking care of herself, and even before her ascension to god tier was a near flawless shot with her rifle. She also shows some ability to beat the crap out of people in hand to hand combat. She's incredibly brave and willing to sacrifice herself for others, and also concocts a plan with Karkat to get them out of their scratched session. Despite her ability to fight, Jade tends towards mediation rather than conflict in most situations. She makes a deal with her denizen, the "final boss" of her planet, for help saving her friends rather than outright killing her like the trolls did.
Jade is also very, very intelligent! It's never really said how much, but as she's a thirteen-year-old who studies nuclear physics and fixes her grandfather's incredibly complex inventions for fun, it's pretty easy to assume she's approaching genius territory. She also hates revealing the future to her friends, which comes up a lot during the course of the story due to time shenanigans. As such, she'll do everything she can to reveal as little as possible while keeping them mostly in the dark, and even seems to confuse Rose a bit sometimes. She's gone as far as using passwords to keep Karkat from gaining unnecessary knowledge about the future.
Jade is also pretty willing to forgive people for being giant assholes, as long as they're truly sorry about it and make a conscious effort to change. In fact, she doesn't even seem to hate Jack all that much after meeting him. She just seems to view him as a badly trained dog who needs to be watched, despite the fact that he massacred all of the trolls' dreamselves and three of the kids' guardians.
ABILITIES: Jade's grandson puts it pretty well: "Legend tells she was something of a witch with [space]! Once she was a brave hero like you and i john and the stars themselves twinkled in her cauldron."
Basically, Jade can manipulate space to an incredible, almost unlimited degree. As she's reached god tier, she has complete control over her element and doesn't need to rely on objects to manipulate it as she used to. This means she can shrink entire planets and make them orbit around her, enlarge and shrink any other object (including people), teleport herself, others, and various objects, and use telekinesis to move almost anything, the largest object in canon being a huge battleship. Jade reached god tier in a rather interesting way: Her dreamself had become a sprite and merged with Becquerel, Earth's first guardian. This means she not only has all of the powers a normal player who had reached god tier would, but also Bec's powers and the knowledge of her sprite. Bec has been shown to turn himself into a portal into other dimensions, and Jadesprite has been able to teleport objects (and presumably people) to other locations. Sprites also have innate, unparalleled knowledge of Sburb, which Jade also gained when she merged with Jadesprite.
And then there are the powers god tier itself grants its players. Jade cannot be killed by normal means, and will only stay dead if her death was just or heroic. Basically, if she martyred herself for a good cause, or became a threat and had to be stopped. Any other mortal injury will cause her to die for a few moments and then revive. It also allows her to fly.
Now I know what you're thinking! This is insanely overpowered, no way are you bringing her in here like this. Which is where her loss comes in!
Basically, Jade will retain her powers of telekinesis and teleportation, with some exceptions. Both of these will be affected by the Castle and the in-game universe, so she won't be able to teleport anything (including people) in or out of sealed rooms in the Castle or the game's world, obviously. Her powers to shrink and enlarge things will also be limited. Basically, they'll be a bit dodgy on people and won't always work (this is so if there's a villian rampaging around Paradisa, she won't be able to magically shrink them away unless the other mun would like her to). She won't be able to manipulate the size of anything larger than a semi truck, either.
As for the Jadesprite aspect, she'll lose her knowledge of SBURB's inner workings and any sprite knowledge she had, and won't be omnipotent like Bec was.
THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: Jade still feels strange. It isn't quite this weird castle she's landed in, either. There's a difference in her she can't place, something much more subtle than her new found powers or fancy dog ears. As she waits for someone to respond on this fancy journal thing, she decides to take the time to examine her awesome god tier outfit. It's super sparkly, and she can't help but think it's even cooler than John's. And she has Wizard of Oz shoes! Jade isn't sure she likes being the Wicked Witch, but she can't hate on glittery ruby slippers too much.
She can't help but worry about her friends, though. She and John were safe, she was certain. If this place was what was supposed to be behind those two windows, he was here somewhere. Clearly they'd just gotten split up! All of the others were missing too, though, because somewhere along the way their plan hadn't gone quite as intended. She wonders if Dave and Rose are okay. She knows about their plan, and though she hates it, she had to admit she didn't really see any other way around it. Maybe there was some way to revive a dreamself. Maybe they were both safe and sound with Karkat and the others. Honestly, it wasn't something she wanted to think about--she couldn't imagine being without Dave or Rose or both.
But they were all supposed to get out. Most of them. It would be fine. If everything had gone according to plan, the trolls were safe, too. And as much of a grumpy fuckass as he could be sometimes, Jade really did think of Karkat as a good leader. He'd certainly get all of his friends to the meet up point safely. Dwelling on her worries about Dave and Rose won't help, and honestly, merging with Jadesprite has made her even more terrified of breaking down and being completely worthless.
But it hasn't happened yet. So maybe she's safe.
Jade glances at the journal again impatiently and clicks her heels together as she waits. One, two, three. Maybe ruby slippers can grant wishes and send people back home, too? If so, she wishes all of her friends were here with her, safe and sound. Of course nothing happens, and she lets out a quiet huff as she crosses her legs underneath her, leaning towards the journal again. Still nothing! In about two seconds, she's just going to start searching herself. The castle is huge, sure, but space powers have to count for something, don't they?
FIRST-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: hi!! :O

INTENT: Jade is one of my favorite characters to play, just because she's so friendly and so easy to net CR with. She's also adorable.
