HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. I read through this part:
It had been almost three months since they'd last seen each other... not a long time under most normal standards. For two people whose longest previous continuous separation in their nine-year partnership had been three weeks, however, "forever" seemed an adequate description.

... and came up with my official guess. 2003, with the "nine months" reference I'll even give you the first half of 2004. But definitely post-2003 Worlds.
