Character
Name: Rise Kujikawa
Series: Persona 4
Timeline: Post-True End
Canon Resource Links: Information on the series can be found
here and information on Rise can be found
here!
Affiliation: She'll most likely aim for coordinator in the future, but for now, trainer it is!
Personality:
Just what you'd expect from an idol, Rise is energetic, optimistic, and all aboard the affection and friendliness boat. She's also... kind of shameless and a flirt, although she doesn't overdo it by any means. She just makes it apparent when she likes you, cheerful teasing included. There aren't a whole lot of topics that can embarrass her, and she's usually the one to bring up those topics in the first place, never minding how awkward it makes everybody else around her. Sadly, she's also been known to be blunt, like when she admires the dolls that Kanji made, and when he tells her he was the one who made him, her first reaction is to call it creepy-- though later, she concedes that he might just be amazing.
Rise can be nosy and highly inquisitive, and okay sometimes her hyper and chipper attitude can get a little too much for some people, and okay sure, she'll get uncomfortable when viewed only as Risette, and she's prone to dramatic tears and the occasional angry outburst, but Rise isn't a ditz. She can smile and pose, but she knows when to be serious and focused, and she's intelligent, reliable and supportive, devoted to contributing to the fight as much as she can and supplying the team with the information they need to take on their battles. She definitely has her thoughtful moments, and sometimes second-guesses herself about... well, herself, and what she really wants, but she always solidifies her resolve in the end-- in this case, she decides to return to showbiz in the spring, determined to show the audience all of the other aspects of her personality, and not just the ditzy part that's Risette.
According to her grandmother, she's like tofu: "looks weak and fragile, but it's actually pretty resilient. Even though it stands out because it's not like any other food, it can be mixed in with any recipe or flavor." And it's true; while appearing to be frail, Rise has a very strong will and insists on doing everything in her power to help her friends. This is seen when she helps analyze and provides support no less than ten seconds after facing her Shadow, even though she's been weakened by her time spent in her dungeon. Despite the fact that she collapses shortly after the battle ends, she remains steadfast and determined to help out the people who saved her life. She's a hard worker who throws herself into any task placed before her. She can stand out in a crowd, but she can also blend in just as well, and her acting abilities are mentioned several times. She's very good at adapting.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strengths-
- charisma; you need it to succeed it as an idol, and Rise doesn't allow anyone to feel left out and unimportant. It's fairly easy to make friends with her and she'll guarantee a fun and exciting experience.
- she can adapt to situations quickly and rise to the occasion in order to do what has to be done.
- she's dependable. Regardless of what she can do or not, Rise always does her best to be the best support she can be-- even when she's exhausted and at her limit. That speaks volumes of her resilience as well.
- CHEERINESS. Rise is an excellent cheerleader, one more likely to grin than to frown, and is always happily praising any one of her teammates whenever they get a good hit in. If someone gets knocked down, once they're up, she's right there going, "Okay, time for a counter-attack!" instead of "Ohhhh nooooo". Even when something gets her down, she does her best to distract herself from it, or forces a smile until she can actually brighten up.
- she's... stubborn. Which can be both a strength and a liability, but when Rise's got something that needs to be done or that she believes in, she's nearly unstoppable. And, even as an idol, she still cares about her fans and their dreams, faithfully reading their letters and once going on a campaign designed to stamp out bullying.
- she's a good actor. She can go from quiet to subdued to happy and perky within seconds, and "Risette" is only one facet of her personality, but Rise can make that facet appear to be what she's all about, just as she can do the same with the other facets.
Weaknesses
- do not let her cook. Ever. She has the tendency to spice up her food a LOT, and that never ends well for people's unfortunate taste buds.
- not always as confident as she appears. Rise is still very much insecure at times, becoming rather upset when she first hears that she's been replaced by another idol, and ends up questioning her choice to give up that job several times. She still has trouble with people only wanting to befriend her because of her idol self, "Risette", which makes her feel even worse.
- she's-- dramatic, a true master of crocodile tears. And her temper isn't always the best. It's not uncommon for her to stamp her foot and get huffy and stomp around whenever she's irritated or jealous, so if you manage to anger her, expect Rise to snap right back.
- not much of a fighter. Rise's got a very nice (and by nice, I mean painful) punch, but she doesn't fight like the rest of the team, so she can't actually defend herself that well if something were to happen.
- her grades aren't the best and the idol life miiiight have spoiled her a little; while studying with the group, she once grumbles that there isn't really a point in learning English when she can just get a translator to handle that.
Pokemon
Starter: An Oddish, named after Rise's Persona Himiko.
Samples
First Person Sample: [ When the video feed begins, Rise is primping. Not herself, actually, but the odd plant-looking thing in her lap. Once she's sufficiently fluffed up the thing's leaves, she lifts it up ]
There! The first rule about being on camera - besides that thing about it adding ten pounds - is you never let 'em see you sweat! Not that I think you... can sweat, but it's good advice! So go ahead, give the world your best smile!
[ instead, the pokemon burrows into her arms ]
-- Hm. Obviously, we've got a minor case of stage fright here. All right, Himiko, we'll do it together. See, I'm smiling! It's not so bad! Just pretend you're smiling at me, with me, and-- [ now the Oddish is beaming at her, and Rise is grinning brightly back, looking rather proud of herself ] So maybe my grades aren't that great, but at least I'm good at coaching. [ she pauses again, as if only just now remembering that she was trying to use this thing correctly. And sure enough, there's a guilty expression. ]
Ummm, so actually, if anyone's seen a handsome guy with gray hair or a short detective or a blond guy who might look scary, but he's actually really nice sometimes a little weird maybe and he's probably making sweaters for all the cold little pokemon out there-- and anyone who might be with them, could you let me know? There'll be a nice little bonus from Risette if you can help me out!
Third Person Sample:
Had Rise not spent months inside a television, guiding the team through a motley assortment of dungeons ranging from a mad scientist's bunker to Heaven to their final, fog-filled destination, she might have spent the next three hours freaking out. Not that she hadn't had a temporary lapse of calm when she'd woken up in a bed not her own and was greeted by a woman not her mother, nor even her grandmother or heck, she would've happily taken her manager instead of this total stranger! But she'd been given a backpack, a different outfit, and waved off with well-wishes.
And now here she was, away from the idol business with only a blue turnip with eyes to keep her company. The Pokedex had finally clued her in to where she was, but Rise had never actually played the games or watched the show beyond an episode or two; she'd simply been too busy, and when she'd taken her hiatus, she'd been thrown into the chaos of Shadows and Personas and the Investigation Team and she'd never so much as considered sitting down with a hand-held game.
Luckily, she'd had some experience with navigating an entire dungeon shaped like a video game, and her additional experience with monitoring battles and tossing out support and encouragement proved to be useful when the turnip - no, Oddish - no, Himiko got into battles. Still, Rise was more used to support than actual leading, and she'd had to learn to actually tell Himiko what to do, rather than watch the little pokemon throw itself at birds and hope for the best.
So far, it had just been "Absorb, Absorb, Absorb, that's the way to do it", but when your pokemon only had two attacks and neither one really did a whole lot of damage, you did your best with what you had at your disposal. Rise didn't have Kanzeon's presence there with her, enhancing her scanning and detection abilities, but she did have an Oddish who was doings its - her - best to win.
Just like her friends.
And she would support it - her - like she had done for her friends. Satisfied with this thought, Rise picked up the pace, hoping to get out of this grass soon; she wasn't used to all of this walking and her feet were throbbing in protest.
... And then she stopped and did a double-take when she looked down and suffered the realization that the Oddish was practically invisible, the leaves on its head nearly indistinguishable from the blades of grass.
"... I guess support outside of battles is something I'm used to, too, huh?" she murmured, and stooped down to scoop up the Pokemon and settle her comfortably in her arms. "Okay~! One of us will ride in style and the other one will blaze a path! Let's get going, Himiko!"
