Valentine’s Night

Andrea was sitting in the restaurant where Paolo had told him to be at half past five p.m. and by now it was past six. Andrea sighed. He had known it. Not even on Valentine’s Day Paolo was there, and Andrea was sure that Paolo would come home later, would apologize and tell him that the family didn’t let him go earlier. How Andrea hated it to be the second after Paolo’s wife. He was okay with that, after all he had all he had ever dreamed of; he was Paolo’s lover, but it hurt.

“You want something to eat?” the waitress asked for the third time. Andrea thanked her and told her that he would leave. He wouldn’t sit there and wait for Paolo who would not come. Andrea shuffled home and at home he sat down on the couch, turning on the TV, because he couldn’t sit there and stare at the heart made of candles he had prepared for Paolo; he also couldn’t look at the flowers standing on the table, it all just reminded him that today was Valentine’s Day and that he was alone. By now it was ten to seven, and Andrea wondered if Paolo would come at all.

He ordered some pizza and ate it, considering if some chocolate would make him feel better. He hated moments like this so much and yet he wasn’t able to tell Paolo to stop that. He wasn’t able to tell his lover that he didn’t want to go on like this, that he didn’t want to wait all the time. And he couldn’t. He was too weak. Or maybe too much in love. He actually was afraid of losing Paolo if he told him he wasn’t happy with the current situation. Andrea turned off the TV, because he didn’t want to see a film about a couple in love. He lay down on the couch and decided to eat chocolate, because chocolate always helped.

Two more hours passed and Andrea was about to go to bed when suddenly the doorbell rang. Andrea went over to the door and opened it, and there was Paolo, standing there like a lost child with a bunch of beautiful red roses and a box with chocolate in his hands.

“Andrea, I… please forgive me, my family didn’t let me go and I wanted to but I can’t risk that they know about us and… I know I am too late but I have a surprise for you: I will stay here for all night,” Paolo explained. Andrea had wanted to tell him that he was unhappy because Paolo was so late but now he couldn’t. Now his eyes lit up and he was the happiest man on earth.

“Happy Valentine’s Day, my love,” Paolo said. Andrea smiled.

“Happy Valentine’s Day to you, too.” And when Paolo embraced him everything felt perfect again, and now Andrea knew why he never complained: because moments like this one were worth it. And a Valentine’s Night was even better than a Valentine’s Day…
