I read the screenplay too... that extra element was my least favorite part. I'm glad they cut it.

As for the idea of why show it when so many people have seen it, it's the same question a 4th year philosophy student might ask in regards to reading Descartes' meditations.

The answer, basically, is that as you live your life, as you grow, the things that used to be important may not be, and you may notice things you've never noticed before. This is especially true of movies. If you don't believe me, go back to a movie that is supposedly a classic, but you didn't like when you first saw it.. watch it now, and see if you still feel the same way.
Or, if you prefer, find some movie you loved as a kid and watch it. look at how bad it is.

On the Descartes' note... I've read those meditations 3 different times at 3 different points in my philosophical career. My copy has underlines and comments of everything I found important. Maybe 10% of the various underlinings overlap.
