It’s his birthday.
Yet he can’t understand why his father loudly slams the door shut.
He sits on the large, plush bed and just wants to sob.
It’s his birthday and he’s turning eight.
At school, many of his classmates talk about this day in barely contained excitement.
He should’ve known only his would be different.
The small boy brings his knees to his chest and cries, because today his dad finally stopped spanking him.
He just began beating, until all he wanted to do was never see him again.
“Happy birthday dear Jack,” he whispers, just to hear it.

He boxes her on the side of the head, admiring the gentle shine of her curls.
She gives a shout, shoving him away, gingerly fixing the red headband.
Rolling his eyes, the small boy quickly stands, making sure no one saw.
Sticking out his tongue, he runs away from the small girl who flicks a finger he’s only seen in most movies.
He’ll give that one a try one day.
Sitting at the dining room table, he leans over the cake.
The lights go out with a start and he jumps slightly scared.
“Happy birthday Chuck!” she exclaims.

She stands before her mirror, turning this and that way.
“Don’t you think you’d look nicer in something your own size?” is the quick question from her mother.
Forcing a smile, she nods and watches the door quietly shut.
She’s turning eight and today should be a great day, it has been a great day.
She’s discovered a woman named Audrey and assures herself that one day they’ll be the same.
Something your own size.
Standing, she glances at the mirror again, the image becoming almost hazy.
Thin girls always got her mother’s attention.
A quick, delighted smile appears.

Hand travels over smooth, pale skin and he groans.
A smirk covers his face as he kisses her until he can’t breathe anymore.
Never wanted to.
Brow furrows and he can’t control this unsettling rage that boils over.
Palm smacks across her face and he cradles his hand, confused.
He didn’t want to hurt her, not anyone.
So confused and couldn’t help himself no matter how much he tried.
The woman blankly stares at him; too drugged up to even realize he’s just hit her.
Just wants to make it better; like his dad did.
It's his best birthday.

No offense to women, but he considers them whores.
A loud, gallant laugh and he inhales the large plume of smoke.
Nails scratch into his skin, he gasps; both pain and pleasure.
Deep breath and the world becomes a hazy mess.
Hips jerk and women moan.
Phone rings in his head, sound vibrates off skull and brain.
Pushes himself up, wipes drugged sleep from eyes.
Stumbles over naked bodies, drugs litter the ground.
Ringing continues; annoyed looking for that damned phone.
Drops down to hands and knees, sifts through clothes.
Answers phone with a mumble.
“Happy birthday,” she whispers.
