We had our first real snowfall of the season yesterday and last night. It started about 2PM, and continued off and on into this morning. This was a "lake effect" snow event, so high snow totals were very localized. Syracuse was right on the edge of one of the lake effect bands, so while the city got 3 to 5 inches (7.5 to 12.5 cm.) of snow. The ( Read more... )

36 inches? HOLY CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I will some times see that kind of woodpecker in the yard. :)
I need to refill my feeders. The seed feeders are getting fairly low.
Not sure about the suet feeders.

Stay safe. :)

Thanks, Jon!

Yeah, Redfield is on the Tug Hill Plateau. They get huge amounts of snow there, often double what we get here in the 'Cuse. The weather and land is too miserable for farming. The few people who live there commute to Syracuse for work (like my mailman), or work in the local tourist industry. During the summer, people come from far and wide to go fishing there in the Salmon River. In the winter, it is the snowmobiling capitol of the north east!

Living next to the cemetery, I'll bet you get lots of interesting birds at your feeder in the winter.

Sounds like a much better place to live during the Summer time. LOL...

We get quite a variety.
Unfortunately, for my tastes, too many crows. :o

Impressive icicles!

It is trying to snow here, sort of. A few flakes in the wind. But I don't think it will settle.

Thanks! Some years I have had an icicle or two that were two stories tall! Those can get dangerous!

It is nice to have snow for Christmas. Here that is pretty common. Once the holidays are over, I get tired of the snow quickly.

How often do you have snow on the ground for Christmas Day?

I can't ever remember having a white Christmas here.

In the past, we might see a few inches of snow once every five or ten years, and it most often arrived in February and March. But lately our winters are becoming unpredictable.

I looked it up on Google: Since 1902, there has been at least 1 inch of snow on the ground here for Christmas 63% of the years.

I am always amazed at the information available online!
