[It's taken Zuko a few minutes to figure out what exactly he's supposed to do with the journal, since it's a little more advanced than anything they've got back home, and he wants to be sure he'd doing this right. First impressions, while not the be all and end all of interacting with others, are still important, and he wants to make a good ( Read more... )

Doing your job.

What do you think that is, exactly?

Redeeming an inmate.

[Iroh's had an afternoon that hasn't really involved the network very much - he's been in the library and the CES and has generally been otherwise engaged. So when he comes down from the glass dome to see a familiar figure on the deck, there's a long moment of shock. What with Azula's fleeting appearance, it isn't quite the surprise it would be, but...

It's only when Iroh sees his nephew now that he realises how much he's missed him, and he's halfway across the deck even before he realises he's started walking.]

Fire Lord Zuko. It is an honour to have you among us.

[His tone is deferential, although there's no mistaking the warmth he can't hide below it, and there's a broad smile that keeps trying to fight its way through a mask of faux-formality.]

[Zuko's been trying to get familiar with the Barge since he arrived, which meant it was really only a matter of time before he came up on deck, and he's spent a few minutes looking over the edge of the railing at the space they're traveling through. This wasn't really like anything he'd been expecting.

What he certainly hadn't expecting was to hear a familiar voice, since there's still stuff to do back home for all of them, and the idea of any one of his friends or family members being here is just... odd, so immediately, he turns around, surprised more than anything else.]

Uncle! What are you doing here?

[He doesn't look any older than he did at his coronation. Iroh's relieved; he would have hated the idea that he was yet to spend the years at home that would have bridged the gap between his time and his nephew's.

Really, all he wants to do right now is hug Zuko as hard as he can. He barely manages to hold back on that - for now - because for all he knows Zuko saw him yesterday and it would a peculiar thing for him to go through. His smile becomes mischievous.]

Well, I don't know that it is my place to guess. My Warden says that I am here to be broken of my terrible Pai Sho habit.

[There's a moment of actual shock and concern at the phrase "my warden" - because seriously, if his uncle's here as an inmate, there's something very, very wrong about this place - which softens back into his usual sort of exasperated but amused expression that goes along with Iroh's bad jokes at the mention of Pai Sho.]

Then I guess you've been here for a while?

[It's his own sort of bad joke - because seriously, good luck to anyone trying to stop him from playing Pai Sho and drinking tea - but also an honest question.]

You might want to slow down your expectations, Zuko. It takes a month for most people to be assigned an inmate, and the inmates don't usually want to 'get started' right away.

On that note, welcome aboard! I'm Steph.

Nice to meet you.

And I can't just sit here waiting for an assignment. I've got things I need to do back home.

Well then, it was nice meeting you. Go on, get back to your home things.

[ And a stretched out pause... ]

Although, you know, what with the time stuff it's not like the home things are happening without you.

I know. That doesn't change the fact that I'm here to do a job.
