wow hold on to that purse---it would be such a pain in the ass to have to get a new passport or id. Though I think the worst thing to get stolen would be a camera with irreplaceable photos.

see, that's what everyone says...and i disgree. when my purse was stolen, the only thought that went through my head was that i don't want to be left in italy with no money. even if i go to a US embassy and get a new passport...i need money to get there, and money to get a place to stay, etc. being empty handed in a foreign country makes you feel the most vulnerable. as for the camera or ipod...they can have it. i have pictures of europe back home.

a friend of mine went there with her family through a school trip. so there were several other families there. the mother of one family had her purse ripped from her shoulder and my friend's father ran after the guy like a madman to get the purse back. from what i hear it went down crazy!

i'ld definitely advise using those ugly travel pouches to hang around your neck and inside of your clothes.
