Beckham to play in Toronto!

So, for those that haven't heard, David Beckham signed with the LA Galaxy of Major League Soccer today.

This is huge news for the league, including the newest team Toronto FCApparently, 1000 seasons tickets were sold in LA in a few hours, and 500 were sold today in Toronto (who will play a match against LA at home after Beckham transfers from Real ( Read more... )

A few people in the Wobblies want to get a progressive sports org. together--mostly soccer tournaments between leftist groups (like the OCAP vs. NSG games).

That would be a good initiative that I'd participate in, though we might want to think about it being a league organized by progressive organizations and geared more towards community participation.

Both because sports are a great way to connect to people in working class communities who otherwise wouldn't have anything to do with the left, and because most activist types are notorious for not showing up to even casual pickup games and often don't know or respect the basic principles of the game.

I think eventually it would be great if the left were involved in community sports leagues for kids (provided they knew what they were doing and didn't fuck it up).

But yeah, I think an initiative of progressive sports fans in Toronto would be great. Count me in.
