Basically, my school of thought on buying a mac is to buy the most computer you can reasonably afford. I've had three macs now and each one has lasted over five years -- they're incredibly reliable and long-lasting.
If a MacBook Pro is out of your price range (and I'm guessing it is), my recommendation is to get a MacBook and make a couple of upgrades.
If you need a lot of storage, max out the hard drive space, it's cheap and you'll be thankful later. If not, don't. If you need a lot of storage later you can also get a good external HD on the cheap.
Upgrade the memory (RAM) because that will get you further for longer.
Personally, I like a smaller screen so I'd skimp there.
Definitely, definitely purchase AppleCare, but you don't have to get it until the end of your first year.

also, I'm not the one footing the bill...it's a graduation gift, but I like my mother, so I am taking price into account.
maybe I just need to go the apple store...
my powerbook is four years old...and I've had the harddrive replaced and added extra ram...but it's starting to go south.
