Speaking as a male houseworker, I feel like I'm liberating society every time I do the dishes. What I know of gender expectations renders me a veritable Donna Reed. I arrogantly believe myself to be fighting the power, with the power. I do all the cooking, and most of the cleaning.
Is it hypocricy to pay attention to it by reversing it? Opposing something recognises that it's there, and it should be stupid enough to ignore, shouldn't it?
Mostly I think I cook because I really like cooking. I can't understand why anyone would give it up. Surely Johnny-average is really missing an opportunity for a creative pursuit if he allows dinner to be on-the-table-as-soon-as-I-get-home-or-so-help-me-Doris-you're-in-for-a-belting.
and thats the other thing that we discussed. Most times when a man does the hopusework, it's considered nothing a short of a miracle that it even happened. Say to a female friend asbout your boyfriend "Oh he did the vaccuming" and it generates a response of " Oh MY GOD, really? That was good of him
( ... )
Meh, women need to sort things out at home or leave. In my house you either do the cooking or the dishes, no exceptions. everything else is divvied up.
but in your home there is you and then there is your mum... it makes things a little easier then. Youre not gonna divorce your mum if she forgets to do the dsishes.
