Background Personality: Like his father, Gohan is pure of heart. He is always kind, considerate, and courteous, loves all living things, and is capable of riding the Flying Nimbus (noteworthy since only the pure of heart can ride it).
However, Gohan is unlike his father in two key ways. First of all, Gohan is far from being book dumb. Quite the opposite, in fact -- he's very intelligent. Chi-chi had pushed from Gohan's birth to have the boy grow up to be a scholar, and Gohan does in fact eventually take that path. At the age of 11, he's already made considerable progress, displaying exceptionally high scores in math and the sciences. Gohan, however, doesn't like studying, and has the tendency to skip on occasion. And when your son is strong enough to bench press entire planets and can fly at will, what can a mother possibly do to counter?
The other way in which Gohan differs from his father is far more vast. Despite being half-Saiyan, Gohan utterly detests fighting. He always has, ever since he was very young, though that tended to manifest itself through fear. The best example of Gohan's hatred of battle is in his fight against Cell. Gohan tries to get Cell to stand down by talking to him, mainly about Gohan's hidden powers. Needless to say, it didn't work, but the entire time Gohan wouldn't raise a hand to attack Cell. And this is against a being whose sole purpose is to destroy. This even brings itself to bear a little later, when Piccolo calls out Goku for letting Gohan tag in and even allowing Cell to heal himself before the fight -- Goku was relying far too much on Gohan having similar fighting instincts as himself, without it ever occurring to him that it could be totally different for the boy.
Despite this, Gohan continues to train his body and would rather be a warrior like his father than a scholar. This is because Gohan is fiercely protective about his friends and family, and would prefer to be proactive in keeping them safe. Gohan fights not because he wants to, but because, in his mind, he has to.
And speaking of his protectiveness of his friends? They're also his big berserk button. If you attack and critically wound anyone Gohan cares about -- especially Goku, Piccolo, or Krillin -- when Gohan is in the vicinity, prepare to come within an inch of your life, because Gohan will tap into his hidden powers, and he will unleash them on you at full blast.
Oh, yeah, and one more thing. When Gohan goes Super Saiyan 2, his personality -- in particular, his attitude toward fighting -- changes drastically. No longer is he the boy who wouldn't hurt a fly if he could help it. In his place is an enraged, powerful demon who has no problem dragging a fight out to maximize his foe's suffering. This trait, in fact, is what indirectly leads to Goku's second death -- if Gohan hadn't toyed with Cell like a cat playing with a mouse, Cell would never have gotten the chance to activate his self-destruct sequence, and Goku never would have had to warp both Cell and himself to the afterlife to save the Earth from destruction.
