"Do you ever miss Neverland?" Michael asks. He's still young, young enough to remember Neverland and the adventures - although he thinks he will never forget them. Peter is still young as well, if not as young as he once was.
Neverland no longer has a hold on him, phsyically.
"All the time," Peter says, and the boy who was once carefree to the point of forgetfulness sounds lost, and Michael thinks perhaps he is, because Peter is the original lost boy and he is away from the only home he has ever known.
There's nothing Michael can say to Peter to make him forget: he does not even try. It would tarnish Neverland to do so and Michael's memories of the place are all wonderful, even if scary and dark and filled with longing at points.
"I'm never, ever going to forget," Peter says, after moments of silence. It's the silence that gets to him - he was never one for silence, unless hunting pirates.
"Have you thought of going back?"
Peter is silent after the question and Michael waits, with breath held. He worries about the answer but isn't sure why.
"Of course," Peter replies, finally. "But I know I can't."
There is disappointment, sorrow, pain in his voice, and his words, and Michael understands all too well. Peter is young, but not young enough. Neverland and all its magic is lost to him, with only the memories of the glories to keep him company.
