005.River
The Doctor catches up with Captain Jack Harkness on some backwater planet in the 38th century.
“Captain!” he greets, and is surprised to see a blond toddler run up and embrace his legs with a giggle.
“Doctor,” Jack greets, solemnly, “meet my daughter River Song.”
The Doctor sucks in a surprised breath. “Of course,” he comments, confidently, as he leans down to inspect the curly headed child. “Spoilers.”
015.Early
“Sir,” Ianto interrupts, papers clutched in his hands, “we have a problem.”
Jack bounced the basketball to Owen, as an unofficial “time out” was called. If this turned out to only be coffee rings on the sofa table again, Owen would restart the game. Tosh and Gwen walked closer, both curious, but ready to play again at a moment’s notice.
“It appears that the sun rose thirty minutes earlier than anticipated today,” Ianto briefed.
“Shit,” Jack swore, already moving to a computer station. “Are the weather patterns and tide patterns registering it yet?”
Ianto grimaced, “On a low scale, yes. It’s only going to get worse, I think.”
“Of course, a case,” Owen grumbled, dropping the ball where he was standing. “I was winning, too.”
039.Father
As a young child, Melissa-before she was Alice-had dark hair that tried to curl on its own. Her eyes were bright and big. She gazed at her father like he hung the stars.
When that light in her eyes darkens and she denies their relationship, Jack meets Gwen Cooper. Her dark hair tries to curl and her eyes are big and bright. There is little question that she thinks that he hung the stars.
It’s sort of like getting Melissa back.
053.Trust
The others are busy. Owen is dancing with Diane in a car park, Gwen is teaching Emma about sex, and Jack is commiserating with John about lost family. That only leaves Tosh to deal with the three Weevils in a downtown business plaza. She glares at the screen and then back at her mobile. Why won’t anyone pick up?
She gathers her gun and her Weevil spray and marches toward the SUV. Ianto joins her and matches her stride. He settles is gun into the hostler under his arm and double checks the level in his Weevil spray before pocketing it.
Tosh wants to tell him that he can stay and coordinate over the comms. She’s only been his partner in the field once-and they nearly got eaten. She’s not hoping for a repeat performance.
So when he dives and weaves and bags Weevils with a practiced ease she curses her doubt. He obeys her orders without question (like Gwen would) or snark (like Owen does).
“You can Weevil hunt with me any time,” Tosh informs him as they close the hatch the SUV, safely ensconcing the Weevils inside.
Ianto smiles.
065.Struggle
Gwen looks like an avenging angel, Tosh decides, when the bride-to-be, complete with blood-splattered gown and bouquet, fires a volley of shots at the alien. Tosh’s heart clenches. Once, people held her mother hostage too. Instead of bullets (not that Tosh could shoot then; Jack had taught her how to hold a weapon upon joining Torchwood) there had been sound waves, and her own terror as she cut wires and soldered until her fingers were blistered.
And just like any other time, Gwen comes out ahead like a heroine. Tosh lost her mother even after the kidnappers were vanquished; Gwen could still see her mum whenever.
Sometimes, Tosh struggles not to hate the other woman.
070.Sweet
Gwen likes the cherry flavored wine gums best. They’re sweet and childlike. She likes to suck on them as if they’re humbugs. Then Torchwood slowly robs her of her innocence. She begins to think that she is too jaded even for cherry. She begins to suck on the lemon flavored ones. They taste more like life.
085.Myth
The worst thing about Torchwood, in Ianto’s opinion, is the slow destruction of everything he believes and holds dear.
The Institute itself ruined his ability to look at the stars without seeing threats. This was followed by his introduction to people who had been dead (and weren’t any more) seeing only black, inky darkness with something lurking in the shadows, instead of clouds and lyres.
Finally, while perusing the Archives of Torchwood Three, he was at his wit’s end.
“What is this?” he demanded, waving a paper at Jack.
The rest of the team gawked; Ianto rarely yelled. Jack calmly claimed the folder and read over the A4.
“This,” he explained, clearly repeating what Ianto had just read, “is the report following the 1882 capture of a Snette.”
“Which eats teeth!” Ianto raged.
“Yes,” Jack concluded.
“And looks like a traditional rendering of a fairy!” Ianto continued, still irate.
“Yep.” Jack crossed his arms across his chest. “Therefore leading me to believe that-“
“Torchwood killed the Tooth Fairy!”
091.Burst
Owen falls in love at 23. Katie is snarky and funny-she’s bright in a way no one Owen has even met is. He proposes after he tries to make her dinner. She swears burnt roast will always be her romantic meal of choice from then on.
And then she’s gone.
He feels hollow. He covers it with anger and quick mindless sex. Sometimes, a case or an alien or a scientific discovery remind of a light burst he only knew with her. It hurts.
Suzie is empty and bitter-maybe more than him. Tosh is illuminated, but too embarrassed to shine anyway. Owen might avoid her more if she did. Jack is a flood of light shrouded in mystery, which is attractive, but off putting. And Ianto is too much like Katie-so Owen fights it with every ounce of muscle he has. He will never be close to the younger man.
Sometimes the team’s combined light makes him want to explode.
