So I'm watching the True Blood, and liking it, but I'm noticing a lot of "similarities" between this series (based on the book "Dead Until Dark" - 2001)  and Twilight (2005 ( Read more... )

I went out and bought the DVDs at CostCo, but it is on regular Netflicks

I like Rouge well enough, but I'm not a big fan of either Bella or Sookie as characters. I love the Cullens and some of the vampires in this series though.

oh and if you haven't read the book yet, the best friend who likes Sookie's brother is not in the book, at least the first one. In case you noticed her overexplaining who she was in the first episode.

That's pretty funny, because a lot of the story revolved around her. Of course they are basing 12 hours of airtime on a fairly short book by modern standards, so they needed a lot of filler, and you can only have so many boobs in each episode.

I also found the similarities striking. I can't believe that Charlaine Harris hasn't sued the pants off of Stephanie Meyer. And I would have thought Mormons in their plot to take over the world would be more subtle than to obvertly copy plot devices from a very popular series.

I'm pretty sure as long as your not "word for word" you really can't sue anybody when it comes to literature.

The one case I recall recently was when the producers of the movie "Underworld" got sued by White Wolf, because Underworld used as a back story one of White Wolfs novels, of course in the movie they used the exact same names and places, etc, so it was obviously taken from the original.

Neither book has particular original mythos so I know they can't sue each other, but it is funny that both went the vampire-psychic-shapeshifter route.

I'd be mad if I was Charlene Harris because Stephenie Meyer is making a ton more money then her (I assume). Although Charlene didn't go "young adult" genre, so it's her own undoing.
