I was a bit exasperated when I heard they were remaking Evangelion. Why? Eva is a total mess, sure, but it's a fascinating mess, and a mess that is, at its heart, the mess of one very unstable and insecure man, or at least a man who was at that point. It's a show which actually has something to say to its viewers and is actively confrontational ( Read more... )

With a bigger budget and a little 'tighter' design like they seem to be going for, I can see how especially the latter installments of Eva might be able to stand up a little better with the general public (That annoying 'is-the-tv-or-the-movie-the-real-ending' thing, for example. I think the final two episodes were a deliberate choice as far as execution- at least in part. There's really not too much of a transition between the end of Episode 24 and the ending, and they could have given us some kind of visual cue other than all-text screens saying the world ended off camera. Look at the final episode of Gunbuster- the epic final battle is played out in stills, accompanied by statistics of how many people died/ships were destroyed, so on. On one hand, obviously they couldn't afford that kind of spectacle, but the execution makes it feel like a snippet off the History Channel or something instead of a cop-out ( ... )

Shinji all talking with a totally unconvincing Jabba the Hutt outside of the bus station in episode 4, yessss. Watch for the appearance of Boba Fett on the bridge!!

Yeah, I'm hoping that the trick with this is that they're creating a consistent movie series to flow into End of Evangelion. I don't really see a point in remaking End of Evangelion, as it's a beautiful film, but telling people who watch EoE before anything else "it'll make more sense if you watch the series!! Honest!!" is always difficult considering the series' rough edges and reputation for extreme unevenness. Condense them down into a couple of slick new films? That's much less of a barrier to entry, and hell, maybe Anno isn't such a headcase anymore. Still kind of wondering how the ten years between EoE and these films is going to affect things thematically.

I think it's funny how both you and David Wisherman have completely opposite viewpoints on what's effectively the same issue.

(Your viewpoint is more valid)
