Why didn't anyone tell me that Persona 3 was the best traditional japanese-style RPG in the past nine years, one which single handedly redeems the PS2's generally abysmal RPG library (even doing so while still taking the two-hit suckerpunch combo of Final Fantasy X and Xenosaga into consideration)?  Oh wait, everyone did, I just ignored them ( Read more... )

Most of the other megaten games (including the other persona games!) are more of that dialog tree crap so forget it is my suggestion

On the other hand maybe try Persona 4, bearing in mind it is NOT the same game as P3

I really, really like everything else about the games, though; the settings, the mythology, the bestiaries - the random and arbitrary monster coercion dialogue trees just did such a number on my sense of game flow that I couldn't deal with them for long. My whims tend to change, so I think they're probably worth another try.

Definitely going to try P4, right after I play through this one (maybe two or three times).

I know I lay it on a bit in excess, with all the "I'm so old! To the devil with these newfangled contraptions!" business, but I feel I must express my bewilderment at the phrase "monster coercion dialogue tree." Now the beasts must be persuaded to fight you?

Rather, to fight for you. I guess it's a bit like Pokemon if Pokemon were all temperamental queens who needed their egos massaged rather than just stuffing them in a ball and forgetting about them until they are somehow useful to you. This wouldn't be so bad if the dialogues had any sort of sense to them, but the answers are all completely arbitrary as to whether they placate the demons' wildly inflated senses of self-importance or just make them even more irate.

Yes Persona 3 is fantastic despite the required level grinding. Are you playing the original or FES?

I can't really recommend the other megaten games (aside from Raidou Kuzunoha vs. The Soulless Army) for reasons the others have stated.

FES, happily, because the Elizabeth dates are my favorite part of the game by far.

I haven't actually run into any "enforced" grinding - The limited number of battles you get before exhaustion in dungeons does encourage much more efficient play; getting as many nights as you can for focusing on other things is just as important as leveling up (especially if I want to boff Mitsuru).

Ahhhh another Elizabeth fan! (Although Mitsuru is a close second..) I even went as far to spend about 70 bucks on this : http://robot-stampede.deviantart.com/art/Elizabeth-103258236

What can I say? I'm drawn to the weird ones. Nice figure, but daaaaaang - Seventy bux? Well, I've been hosed on Yotsuba& figures in my time, so I suppose I can sympathize.
