Sometimes you can turn that sort of stuff off from the service menu; I'd see if you can find the magical controller sequence to get into yours. My 27" Tosh SDTV had a pretty substantial one, but then again, it also didn't do any sort of janky filtering. As far as magic boxes for games if you do get an HDTV, the XRGB-3 is all you need, which isn't rare at all but is pretty much exactly the aforementioned price after the exchange rate.
Fun fact: my projector doesn't even work with 240p over component. Trying to play PS1 games without the XRGB-3 results in this. It should be this--like, y'know, where it isn't squished in half and doesn't have the top chopped off. I ( ... )

From what I read, the service mode offers no such option either. I'd have to plunk down some money for the service manual to find the service mode sequence anyway, and I don't know if I want to do that just to be disappointed!
Yeah, my calling XRGB3 boxes "rare" was mostly just me not being able to find one after a cursory search. It would be nice to actually have something for when I am eventually forced move on up, but keeerist that's a lot of money.
