Compensation...

It could just be me, but I've been noticing that a lot of men seem to have these huge umbrellas they carry around nowadays.  Instead of the compact little pop-out umbrellas of the past, seemingly more convenient to carry around in my opinion, there seems to be a trend towards these things that look like they should be out by the pool covering a ( Read more... )

I have lots of insufficiencies. And I have large and small umbrellas. Gee, I must not be doing something right.

Having large and small umbrellas doesn't necessarily point to not doing something right, especially if you use them practically, ie big umbrella when out with family and might need to get several people underneath it. That would imply that you're using the right tool for the job at hand. ;)

Ahh, in that case, I'm just using my tools correctly. I'm relieved. :)

I had one of those and loved it, big enough to also keep bags/backpacks dry as well as myself and they're MUCH sturdier if it's at all windy. I used it whenever I knew I was going to be dealing with heavy rain. I have a tiny fold-up one that fits in my tote bag for everyday use. Sadly the big one got destroyed when left at a coat check at a museum :-(

See, the people I'm seeing have a lunch bag at most, it's only sprinkling (I didn't even open my "compact"), and they just carry them in a "hey, check out my huge golf umbrella" manner. I'm totally down with it being the heavy-duty "off-road" umbrella. Plus I'm just stuck on this almost getting whacked in the face thing. I'm not that tall, their umbrellas shouldn't be coming in somewhere between my nose and sternum.

I'm a large guy, given that 50+% of most umbrella area is useless, since the handle interferes (there are offset umbrellas but they are rare), a large umbrella allows me to get under it properly. They do also allow the carrying of other materials to be kept dry, so if you only have one umbrella a large one allows flexibility, whereas a small one limits you. The large one also allows use as a cane, thwapping stick, and other such applications.
(I have a small fold out I carry for chance of rain, a large one I carry when it is raining).

You know I'm not particularly tall, about average, so if their umbrellas are almost hitting me in the face (or lower), you know that these guys aren't very big. On them, when they're folded up, they look more like a walking stick than a cane!

Perhaps they need to be ready to use it as a shield for when the miniature water elementals attack.

That's a possibility I hadn't considered. :)
