+ Weekend head cold cancelled all plans, save Man of Steel. Quick review:
Which was an excellent spectacle but felt cold to me. Kal-El was always an outsider, always anonymous, always on the run. The movie never made him a part of anything, never had any heart. Which made it difficult for me to grok why he'd even bother to take that leap of faith the random priest mentions. And where was the humor? When Supes gets knocked into the IHOP and sees his old school buddy, why NOT spare 3 seconds for a "Hi Petey" "Hiya Clark" moment? It wasn't until the very last 3 minutes that the movie felt like it had some humanity -- joking with the general about the drone and the cape flashback. The "look" of it was amazing, I won't lie. And I like the trend of the 2nd-in-command female badass who is somehow more compelling than the main villain. I would have been more impressed if, at the end, Zod realized that Kal-El was the last Kryptonian and his oaths and purpose now applied to him. Also Zod's resolution? Did not like. It was an abandonment of the Superman mythology, I think. The music? Shit son, it's Hans Zimmer, the guy knows his business. And the fights were Exalted-level grandiose, which considering the pseudo-divine nature of Superman, is appropriate. B-B+ for me.
+ I'm involved in two games right now ..
one in realtime one over G+.
Burning Westeros is a Burning Wheel fueled game in GRRMs Westeros; it's going well and has spawned a small number of creative side projects. From building a
game soundtrack to GRRM style character POV
game recaps, to image banks, etc. It's fun - we're playing before the books but with similar themes. The other game is one I'm running, a heavily house-ruled 2nd ed D&D game entitled
Chora, with Prince and the Pauper thing going on. We play every two weeks, over at the Marsh's, and it's a good time. There's a bit of a drawback in that the conspiracy-heavy game loses a bit of traction with the long intermissions, but I think ..it's going pretty well.
I walked through the video game store and nothing caught my eye, and the whole XboxOne thing is annoying.
+ C bought this ridiculous bike that I love. It's pink and girly and very 1950s. I love it. I have to get my bike fixed so we can ride.
+ Work is work ..
financials are terribly worrying and I'm casually job hunting. It's a tough binary: If I could stay, I might be able to move up pretty quickly (relatively speaking) but I'm not sure that the campus will be around long enough for that to happen. Sure wouldn't mind getting back to Georgia. One of my friends at another campus is trying to woo me back to her library, too. Which is flattering, but in the wrong direction. Instead, I'm bracing myself for the PhD if the loan forgiveness thing goes through in 2017. I think I'll come up in 2019, but that's only if the program isn't sunk before I get there. Anyway, yeah, PhD program after that I think. Which is exhausting just to think about. And in other news, I'm writing another article, though casually so. We'll see if it gets published anywhere.
+ I watched this documentary,
The Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom which kind of blew me away. Japan, man. Let's go to Japan. And I just caught the tail end of Looking for a Friend for the End of the World, which reminded me of summer camp girlfriends. That desperate time-winding-down emotional insistence that this feeling is strong and should be served. I liked that one, too.
+ I've had the windows above the sink open for the last few days. There's a particularly leafy bush -- home to some sparrows I think -- that has been acting as my rain-fuelled tambourine. The patter-hiss is soothing. Now, if I could only figure out how to get a working fireplace in here.
+ Hit up a gun show with my brother and my college friend's father-in-law -- a retired cop from Detroit. It was a fun trip. I really enjoyed the moment where Jim was outted as a Detroit vet and the Philly cop took his hat off and shook his hand. My brother and I picked up a few non-violence related items. Good deal on wool blankets and entrenching tools there -- things for the winter car trunk.
I think that's it for now. Take care, Internet.
