Happiness isn't a generally consistent state of being, outside of the mentally touched and the heavily medicated. It's the sort of thing that comes in short bursts, moments of happiness. To paraphrase Carlin, It's a cookie, a good part of a fun book, a close, intimate moment with the person you love.
Joy is a better goal. Happiness is to joy what a puddle is to the great lakes. Children can live in that state for long stretches at a go. When we grow up, it's too easy to let stuff get in the way and distract us from joy. You can see it in the blissed-out expression on a Buddhist who has learned to turn off the distractions inside his own head, and is happily exploring the universe in peace.
i can't remember a time i ever felt that way, truly. I'm a bit of a grass is always greener person; however, i can remember moments in time where i was happy and i remember thinking that maybe that's what life is all about, trying to be happy in whatever moment we're in.
