It wasn't supposed to happen this way.

Sighing in frustration, Ichigo dug his hands into his side pockets. This simply wasn't fair. He had been careful enough hadn't he? He had silenced Keigo, got advice from Tatsuki and even had Ishida go shopping with him to buy some of the smaller items.

So why was girlfriend now on his bedroom floor, cooing at the elaborate gift set that he had literally spent months trying to organise?

"It’s a nice gift Ichigo-kun!" chirped Orihime happily, "Its not even my birthday yet!"

'That's because it was for your birthday!' Ichigo wanted to howl, yet he bit back his tongue, silently cursing at his own stupidity. The gift was usually hidden at the back of his closet, safely tucked away for the elaborate birthday party Tatsuki would host a week from that day. So what had led up to this?

In fact, what was he thinking inviting her there in the first place? He had spent weeks dancing around the idea of her coming over, so why had he been reckless in the last few moments. And why did he insist that she go up ahead of him? Looking down at Orihime's smiling features as she unravelled another small package, he felt his heart tug. A part of him was happy to see her so at ease and blissful and the other were cursing at the ruined surprise. Orihime seemed to brighten up even more as she picked up a small kitten plushie at the centre of the basket.

"Aww, this is so cute!" said Orihime, turning backwards to face him, “How long where you planning this?"

"Not as long as you think." admitted Ichigo grumpily. He watched as Orihime placed the small stuff animal, along with the unwrapped scented candles and perfume boxes at her side.

"But it seems so much. Ahh, what will you do for my birthday at this rate? You shouldn't go through all that trouble!"

"Its fine."

"But Ichigo-kun..."

Standing from his bed Ichigo knelt to meet her. Ignoring the rest of her protest, he kissed her on the forehead and managed to smile.

"Its fine," insisted Ichigo softly, "You've done a lot more for me you know."

Blushing slightly, Orihime managed to nod before Ichigo stood. He couldn't let her feel bad for his own screw up. Somehow he'd have to think up another gift before it dawned on her what she had just unravelled. Ichigo could just about see the confusion of Tatsuki's face as Orihime explained her surprise present. Ishida would scoff at his mistake that was for certain.

Leaving that thought behind him, Ichigo noticed Orihime's coat on the floor. In her haste to get up the stairs and seeing that gift she may have dropped it in surprise. He didn't think anything of it until he picked it up and saw something slip out of her coat pocket.

"What is this..."

Orihime could barely react as Ichigo picked up the piece of paper. As if waking from dream, Orihime leapt to her feet. Quickly she reached out for the slip, desperately hoping that Ichigo didn't scan very much from it.

"Motorbike lessons?" Said Ichigo in confusion, making Orihime freeze in realisation. Ichigo watched as his girlfriend practically deflated, disappointment clearly written on her face.

"You weren't supposed to see that yet." said Orihime, the warmth fading from her eyes. Ichigo blinked at her in confusion.

"You bought this for me?"

"Its a makeup gift." admitted Orihime sadly, "I didn't buy anything for your birthday."

"You had rent to pay!," said Ichigo "Besides you made that cake, remember?"

"It just seemed unfair." said Orihime, drawing her knees together, "I'm always relying on your kindness."

"Orihime..."

"I just wanted to do something nice for once. Something Ichigo-kun would like."

Eyes softening, Ichigo placed the offending coat on his bed. Without hesitation, he sat down beside Orihime before holding her in a one armed embrace.

"Dummy." he mumbled softly into her hair, "I like you remember? You don’t have to do this."

Orihime seemed to hesitate slightly, before nodding in return. As a result Ichigo just held her closer. He knew she would feel bad about this. Orihime had been apologising profusely during his birthday although he insisted it was okay. He didn’t realise she would attempt to surprise him like this. Taking a quick glance at the forgotten gift set, Ichigo wondered if they were destined to be bad at surprising each other.

At that moment though, it didn’t matter. Ichigo’s focus remained on Orihime, as the brightness in her eyes slowly began to come back again. She didn’t need to feel bad about such things. He knew he was somewhat abrasive in his behaviour, but he wanted to show her she didn’t have to try that hard. His gift was merely an attempt to reflect that fact more than anything else. If it would show her just a fraction of how much he cared, nothing else mattered.

For that, he didn’t care if they were both bad at surprises.
