I know it's a bit late but I really wanted to write about the books I read in 2010 and loved the most. I really love reading other people's lists ! I picked 9 books out of my total of 63 books read.

I love 'The Go-Between' too! It was one of the first books I read at undergraduate level in University! Have you ever read any Carson McCullers? She is very similar in terms of writing style. 'The Member of the Wedding' is a good read!

And I do love 'The Crucible' too. Have you seen the film with Daniel Day-Lewis in it? There is something very interesting about puritanism and especially witchhunting. I like thinking about parallels between those times - McCarthyism and nowadays. I think a lot of Sylvia Plath's work is more concerned with those issues than people think!

I really must read some Proust some day soon!

Hope you have a great weekend! I am meeting friends tomorrow too and studying on Sunday also! :)

I'm glad you agree with me ! It's really fascinating to see how some classics can give you the same chill (love stories, dazzling male characters, drama...) as the latest tv show (not to mention any show in particular...). It's really brilliant. I love that feeling. Unfortunately those books are rare...
Thank you for the tip Maeve ! I've heard so much about Carson McCullers but I've never read anything yet. A good resolution for 2011.

I haven't seen the film with Daniel Day-Lewis yet but I can't wait ! I'm glad you share my interest for puritanism. I'm highly intrigued by what you say about Sylvia and her interest for McCarthyism ! Does she mention it in her journals ?

You must ! But it's really exciting to still have that big challenge to achieve.

I had a great, great Saturday ! What about you ? Tomorrow will be less fun !

Thank you Dear ! I'm very glad you did !

I did have a great Saturday with my friends ! I hope you're having a great weekend too !

Ps : Still no christmas card ? I suppose there must be a place in France or in Scotland where my poor letters are staying unopened... That's a sad thought !

I read "Great House" in 2010 as well. Her style of writing, her use of words is amazing -I agree with you.
Some of the stories were great, too. But I wouldn't call this book a "novel". It is more a collection of some short stories which are sometimes "connected" and sometimes not .... Didn't really like that book.

I'm sorry you didn't like the book ! It was indeed underwhelming for me too. I wasn't particularly fascinated with the main idea / goal (linking all those places, all those characters with one object) but the beautiful words made it worth reading for me. I wish she had made a novel with the story of Leah ! I loved, loved that story.
Did you read anything good in 2010 ?

Oh yes, read quite a lot of good books last year. I have mainly been reading books about South Africa or books written by South African writers for about 1 year now .... Crazy, somehow, I know. Don't think that you are that much interested in South African literature, therefore here a list of some "normal" books I especially liked: ;)

- Room by Emma Donoghue
- Indignation by Philip Roth
- Kings Of The Water by Mark Behr (ok, it takes place in South Africa ..)
- Eureka Street by Robert McLiam Wilson (We read that one in school)

Thank you so much ! I'm most definitely going to check these out ! I always stay in the same old familiar "areas" when it comes to books but I love to discover new authors. Thank you ! I'll let you know how it goes :)
