History:
...ahaha. WELL-
Samurai Archives InfoSenBasa Wiki Well, now that all three sentences of usable information are out of the way, let's talk about Mitsunari in SB3. Since I'm taking him from the game, the games hold multiple paths - I'll be taking him from his secondary (blue) path. But first, a little back story on this boy:
Not much is known about Mitsunari's past. In his youth, he came into the service of Toyotomi Hideyoshi and ascended the ranks to general quite quickly. It's uncertain how long he'd been under the service of the Toyotomi clan but his loyalty towards Hideyoshi is incredibly deep. He serves as a retainer for the Toyotomi clan and his duty is, and always has been, the only thing that's ever mattered to him. He worshiped Hideyoshi like a God and everything in his life was completely dedicated to the man.
When Tokugawa Ieyasu, a former vassal to Lord Hideyoshi, killed Hideyoshi, Mitsunari knew his fate was sealed from that day forward. He would kill Ieyasu and force the man to repent for his sins. Taking command over the Western provinces, Mitsunari set out with Otani Yoshitsugu, his advisor, by his side. Fueled by rage and the desire for vengeance against his former ally, Mitsunari swore he would cut down and defeat anyone who stood in his way. He has no real interest in conquering the nation, he only desires to serve his deceased master. Taking on the title of "The Dark King Mitsunari", Mitsunari increased his army's power, doing his best to intercept any of Ieyasu's attempts at forging alliances with the other clans. For every step Ieyasu took, Mitsunari was at his heels.
...At least, until Date Masamune decided to speak up. Expressing his distaste for Hideyoshi's former reign and his whimpering pup (Mitsunari), Masamune laughed in the face of the West and this served to do little more than further rile Mitsunari up. Although he'd faced off against Masamune at the Battle of Odawara, he held no recollection of defeating this man, all that mattered at this point was that Ieyasu's demise could wait - Masamune had insulted everything he stood for and must pay for his insolence. He would pay gravely.
It was through this pursuit that the Takeda were brought to his attention. Sanada Yukimura had heard of Mitsunari's desire to take down Masamune and insisted on joining him. Mouri Motonari and Chosokabe Motochika would join him as well, eventually making their way to recapture Osaka from the East.
Character Personality:
Aggressive, dedicated and fiercely dominant, Mitsunari's heart is full of malice. A simple way of defining Mitsunari Ishida would be "a child having a tantrum" because in essence, that is what he is. He has little control over his emotions and solves his issues with violence and little more. He refuses to compromise on principle and is brutally honest. He doesn't cope well with change and often lashes out at those around him with little provocation. In particularly extreme cases, Mitsunari is completely incapable of remembering what he's done while fueled by his rage - case in point, during Mitsunari's secondary path, he holds a burning hatred for Date Masamune. In Masamune's own secondary story, Mitsunari cannot recall who Date is or any significance the Oshu daimyo has (despite Date claiming they fought at the battle of Odawara sometime during Hideyoshi's reign, prior to the events of the game).
However, despite the foulness of his regular mood, his dedication and loyalty towards his master knows no bounds. Even after the death of Lord Hideyoshi, everything Mitsunari does is in the name of his fallen Lord. He commits himself fully to seeking his revenge, not truly caring about conquering the nation (despite controlling one of the most powerful armies in Japan). He just wants to serve in the name of Lord Hideyoshi, caring not for power or wealth.
In Mitsunari's eyes, all he is capable of doing is reigning down misery and hatred. His heart is full of bitterness and his world is void of joy and happiness. Despite behaving as though this is what he wants, Mitsunari is cripplingly insecure. He needs constant validation for his efforts - which is where his opportunistic advisor shines. Yoshitsugu, a leper, is bitter towards the world that treated him so cruelly and he exacts his own vengeance by using Mitsunari as a means of obtaining just what he wants. He constantly encourages Mitsunari's instability and fosters the growth of his anger - according to Yoshitsugu, he's never witnessed anyone as empty and full of hatred as Ishida Mitsunari. Anguish sustains him and all that. Yet Mitsunari remains deeply loyal to Yoshitsugu and views him as being human, rather than being a disease - he offers up all the respect and faith he can place into his advisor, which can lead to Mitsunari acting quite irrational whenever someone dare say something negative regarding his companion. He's savagely beaten his own men for their insolence, when some of his soldiers dared to mock the leper.
Although it's stated that Mitsunari has nothing in this world he can truly call his own, this claim is false in a way. His deep sense of loyalty is nothing to shake one's head at. He values people's word highly and commands respect with an iron fist. If someone shows their respect towards to him (and by proxy, Lord Hideysohi), Mitsunari is willing to welcome them to the Western army.
He's incredibly straight-forward as well, bluntly phrasing things and never masking his true intentions. He is a man who claims to have never told a lie, a statement that is most likely true. He is a man who stands for what he believes in and believes in it fully - convicted to his cause and willing to sacrifice his life for his beliefs. He can be stubborn and hard-headed, making it very difficult to change his mind once he's decided upon something. He's relentless and fierce, not backing down in the face of adversity when it comes to defending what he believes is just and right. He's not afraid to die if he dies in service to Lord Hideyoshi.
In addition to all of this, Mitsunari is not a man of great faith. He puts faith in two things: his own skill and Lord Hideyoshi. He doesn't believe in Gods (save for Lord Hideyoshi, who he reveres as such) and puts no faith in oracles or seers. The stars don't mean anything to him, fortune-telling is a waste of time and he's rather vocal regarding his absence of faith in these things.
...He is also a cranky boy who needs his nap and maybe a juice box.
Character Abilities:
Mitsunari is a practitioner of Iaijutsu. He's a master of swordplay (more on his in-game skills below) and has seemingly been training in the art all of his life. He's rather intelligent, though you would never be able to tell based on how irrationally he acts time and again - he has studied military tactics and historically speaking, the individual he was based on was quite the mathematician. This is never much touched on in the game, however, but it would be reasonable to assume as such. Various comments in battle can indicate a calculating mind - he knows how many men to send in against an invading army, he knows what tactics to employ to launch a sneak attack and he's perfectly comfortable riding a horse and smacking people in the face with a sword. The sheer skill and trajectory required for that feat's gotta be impressive!
Speaking on a purely supernatural level now, Mitsunari is capable of teleportation. He was definitely a creature built for speed and is capable of moving in an instant towards the enemy. The ability to teleport between attacks makes him very effective at dealing with large mobs, being able to move between them and take them all down before they even know what's hit them.
Normal Arts:
Vexation- shoots a wave of dark sword energy towards his opponents that will slash them apart from a distance. When this skill is maxed, it acts as a vacuum wave and will suck nearby enemies into the frenzied attack.
Lamentation- Mitsunari teleports forward and slashes through an enemy, can hit multiple
Depression- Mitsunari slowly sways and then teleports in a circle, cutting down everything within that circle's radius
Condemnation- A swift jump-strike that will knock multiple enemies into the air.
Super Arts:
Extermination - Shoots a wave of sword-based death at the enemy. It can auto-target a boss' weak point.
Decapitation - ...Self explanatory.
Reverence - Mitsunari's body fills with the power of darkness and hatred, causing his movements to slow down considerably and lose all of his defenses but a single blow from his sword now is enough to kill anything that stands in his way. When he misses his target, he will roll a short distance across the ground and lay face-down for a bit. It's kind of adorable.
BASARA:
When his BASARA gauge is full, Mitsunari hacks and slashes his way to victory. There are usually no survivors.
Character Weaknesses:
Hello, co-dependency. How are you this fine day? Although he projects himself as a leader, Mitsunari is nothing more than a child. He needs constant validation and a steady hand to guide him, keeping him on the straight path. If he had things his way, he would rise up and kill every man that looked at him funny.
He's exceptionally blunt and straight-forward, which can get him into a bit of trouble. He often reacts with haste and overreacts quickly, not about to let someone get a word in edge-wise if they dare speak ill of his Lord. The idea of "subtlety" escapes him for the most part and he's brutally honest - he claims never to have told a lie. This sort of honesty goes so far as to abandon Yoshitsugu's carefully laid plans - case in point, when Yoshitsugu was attempting to get Tsuruhime to join the West, he sent a kindly worded letter to her and signed it from Mitsunari. Instead of going along with this ploy, Mitsunari discarded all of it and treated Tsuruhime the same way he treats everyone who annoys him - with absolute disdain.
Why your character should be a Weapon:
Putting it bluntly, Mitsunari is a weapon. He's a loyal follower of the Toyotomi and is a willing blade. Although he is considered the daimyo of Osaka after Hideyoshi's fall and although he is capable of commanding and delegating as a general should, he is still not a true leader. He is in constant need of someone to keep his emotions in check, lest he go around killing every man that dare offend him.
What is your character's Weapon form?:
A katana (an Iaido blade).
